OAKLAND, Calif. Paul Pogba France Jersey . -- Drew Pomeranz approached his fill-in start the same way he has every outing in relief this season. Maybe thats why he had so much more success than hes used to as a starter. Pomeranz pitched five scoreless innings for his second win in his past 20 starts and the Oakland Athletics salvaged a split of a doubleheader by beating the Seattle Mariners 2-0 in the nightcap Wednesday. "It felt a little weird at first," Pomeranz said. "I was trying to take the same mentality Ive had all year. Ive had some success doing that, staying in the stretch, keeping things as simple as I can out there. Just tried to treat it like I was coming into a game." The Mariners overcame a shaky start from ace Felix Hernandez to win the opener 6-4 on Justin Smoaks two-out single in the 10th inning. Despite the loss in the nightcap, Seattle heads home satisfied following a 7-2 road trip that also included stops in New York and Houston. "To come out of this series 7-2 is just an unbelievable trip in my opinion," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Just phenomenal. I was very proud of the team and how they played. We put ourselves in a pretty good position." Yoenis Cespedes homered for the second straight day and Craig Gentry scored from first on a single by Jed Lowrie to help the As snap a six-game home losing streak. Pomeranz (2-1) was sharp in his first major league start since last July, allowing two hits and no walks in five innings with five strikeouts as he mixed in his change-up for the first time all season. Pomeranz won just one of his final 19 starts with Colorado, leading to an off-season trade to the As where he has pitched well in relief. But he stepped when the As needed another starter for the doubleheader and got the win. "I couldnt have expected any more than that," manager Bob Melvin aid. "Pretty fantastic for a guy who hasnt started a game for us in spring or this season." The As took the lead in the third. Gentry ran on the pitch from first base on a full count with two outs when Lowries popup fell between left fielder Cole Gillespie and shortstop Brad Miller for a hit. Cespedes added to the lead in the fourth with a solo homer off Erasmo Ramirez (1-4), who was called up from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day to make the start. Ramirez allowed two runs in six innings. Dan Otero, who allowed the go-ahead hit in the 10th inning of the opener, pitched three scoreless innings of relief and Jim Johnson finished the three-hitter for his second save and first since losing the closers job a month ago. "Thats what hes used to doing -- 1-2-3 today," Melvin said. "That was huge." This was just the second traditional doubleheader in Oakland in the past 16 years, with the other in 2011. The makeup game was necessary because a game was postponed April 4 when the field was unplayable after there was no tarp on it overnight. Hernandez failed to strike out a batter for the first time Aug. 19, 2008, against the Chicago White Sox, ending a streak of 179 straight starts with at least one strikeout. He allowed four runs -- three earned -- and matched his career worst against Oakland by giving up 11 hits in 6 1-3 innings. "No strikeouts, not a good breaking ball, not a good change-up," Hernandez said. "Thats what happens when you dont have good stuff." Brandon Moss hit an RBI triple that capped a three-run seventh against Hernandez, but the As could not hold a late lead as Robinson Cano tied the game with an RBI single off Luke Gregerson in the eighth. Smoak gave the Mariners the lead when he hit a chopper off the glove of leaping first baseman Daric Barton for an RBI single off Otero in the 10th after Ryan Cook (0-1) left the game with a strained right forearm. Cook will have an MRI on Thursday but does not believe the injury is serious. Yoervis Medina (2-1) pitched the ninth for the win, and Fernando Rodney pitched the 10th for his ninth save in 10 chances. Oakland centre fielder Coco Crisp strained his neck in the opener crashing into the wall to make a leaping catch. He is expected to miss a few days. Tied 1-1 after three shooters with Marian Gaborik scoring for L.A. and Jiri Hudler responding for Calgary, Monahan improved his record in shootouts to 5-for-8 on the season, firing a shot past Jonathan Quick for his fourth shootout winner. Karri Ramo then clinched the victory with a stop on Mike Richards. The Flames goaltender made 41 saves in regulation, and added a huge stop in overtime as Jarret Stoll tried to jam the puck over Ramos outstretched pad but couldnt despite repeated attempts. T.J. Galiardi and Matt Stajan also scored for Calgary (35-38-7), which has won seven of their last 10. Stoll, Anze Kopitar and Jordan King scored for Los Angeles (45-28-7). The playoff-bound Kings, locked into third spot in the Pacific Division, are winless in four of their last five. Trailing 3-0 at one point, the Kings got tied the game 3-3 at 12:18 of the third, taking advantage of a turnover in the Flames end by Calgarys rookie winger Bryce Van Brabant, playing in his fifth career game. After Van Brabant clearing attempt was intercepted at the Flames blue-line, Jake Muzzins shot was deflected in by King, who was screening Ramo. It was the 15th goal of the season for King and his third in his last four games. The left-winger had missed the previous four games with an undisclosed injury. On the heels of eight consecutive road wins, Los Angeles has just one point to show for the first three games of a four-game road trip, which wraps up Thursday in Edmonton. Calgary opened the scoring when Galiardi scored the lone goal of the first period at 11:58. Galiardi had struggled all season offensively but a rare shift with one of the NHLs hottest players in Mike Cammalleri resulted in his fourth ggoal. Kylian Mbappe Jersey. Set-up in the slot by Cammalleri, Galiardi made a nice move before putting a backhand past Quick. Galiardi then turned playmaker, stripping the puck from Justin Williams along the sideboards and setting up Monahan. The Flames rookie put a quick shot past Quick to make it 2-0 four minutes into the second period. Its the first time a Calgary rookie has scored 21 goals in a single season since Jarome Iginla in 1996-97. The Flames took advantage of another Kings turnover to surge in front 3-0 at 15:28 of the second. This time it was Stajan who eventually had a bouncing puck come to him and he scored his 14th of the season. However, the Kings struck back right away with goals 24 seconds apart to get back to within one. After Stolls deflection of Slava Voynovs point shot at 16:09, Kopitar scored his 26th on an individual effort. Picking up the puck in front of the net, Kopitar carried it behind the net, and back out the other side, making a slick move to elude Monahan as he curled into the slot to zip a backhand past Ramo. Starting for the ninth time in the last 10 games since coming back from a knee injury, Ramo did his part in goal for Calgary, improving to 17-13-4 on the year. Ramo had a shutout streak of over 124 minutes before the Kings finally got on the scoreboard. Quick was far less busy facing only 18 shots. His record fell to 27-17-3 with the loss. Notes: There were no penalties to either team in the game. For the Kings, it was the first time that had happened since Feb. 19, 1977. That had never happened for the Flames since the team moved to Calgary. ... Kings defencemen Drew Doughty (shoulder) and Robyn Regehr each missed their second game as they nurse minor ailments. ... Calgary C Matt Stajan (personal) returned after missing three games. ... Flames LW Paul Byron (personal) missed his fourth game. ... The Kings had won six games in a row in Calgary.
