It’s been a long winter, but we finally have actual live baseball underway within the next few hours and with that comes a look at some of the top prospects in the 2019 MLB Draft.This draft is very likely the last time in the foreseeable future that the Braves will have a high draft selection (ninth overall) thanks to Carter Stewart not being signed with the eighth pick last summer. The Braves also have the 21st pick as their own selection and there is a chance they could get a look at some of these guys we are going to look at today at that point in the first round as well.The top of the 2019 draft is definitely bat heavy which should make a lot of Braves fans happy considering the amount of fans who had wanted the top pick to be used on one in recent years. There aren’t many arms which have established themselves as likely Top 10 picks this early in the process, so although there is still time, you won’t be seeing this list feature too many pitchers.Note that this is just the college side of things and these are guys the Braves could have a chance to draft. For that reason, you won’t see Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman on the list as the likely number one overall selection won’t dropping that far down the draft. You also won’t see top Georgia prep players Daniel Espino and CJ Abrams, both potential Top 10 picks, but both coming from the high school side and will be talked about in a future piece on the Top 10 prep players for the Braves to look at.Andrew Vaughn, 1B, Cal: The reigning winner of the Golden Spikes Award for the best player in college baseball, Andrew Vaughn is a special hitter. His numbers last year not only look great, but accurately describe him as a hitter - a guy who can hit for average and power with the discipline to take walks but also not swing and miss too often. He hit .402/.531/.819 with 14 doubles, 23 homers, 44 walks, and just 18 strikeouts in 199 at bats- and yes those numbers are real. Vaughn then went to the prestigious Cape Cod League and had an OPS over 1.000 with five more homers in just 52 at bats before going to the US National Team. There is some drawback here as he’s not the biggest guy in the world at 5’11” and 208 pounds, as well as the fact he’s likely limited to first base only and would do so with the right/right handed hitting/throwing combo that teams are a little nervous of for their first basemen. Still you can’t argue with Vaughn’s production as well as what scouts have seen from his swing. He will be a Top 10 pick, but the question is whether he goes closer to the third pick or the tenth pick.Josh Jung, 3B, Texas Tech: A former shortstop, Josh Jung is now a power hitting third baseman from a school that the Braves have scoured heavily in recent years after taking a number of former Red Raiders. Jung was a real key to the Tech College World Series run last year as he racked up 35 extra base hits and 80 RBI with an OPS of 1.130. He’s a guy who may need to make some adjustments to fully tap into his in game power that is present in the raw power, but he currently hits for average and plenty of extra base power. Even the home run power isn’t a negative as he managed 12 last year despite not selling out for power.The defense grades differently depending on who you ask and while I’m not a guy who believes he’ll ever be one of those shortstop turned third basemen that become elite defenders, I believe Jung could be a more than adequate defender at the hot corner to go with his bat.Graeme Stinson, LHP Wily Peralta Jersey , Duke: The most interesting arm in the draft is Graeme Stinson from Duke. The 6’5”, 250 pound Norcross HS grad started nine games as a freshman and struggled mightily with a 6.67 ERA. Last year he came into his own and used his dominate pure stuff to be among the best pitchers in the country with a 1.89 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 98 strikeouts in 62 innings. He features a fastball that sits 93-96 from the left side and a plus plus slider generally considered the best in the college baseball today. The problem for teams is that he did so mostly out of the pen, making just four starts to 19 relief appearances in 2018. Teams like Stinson and his stuff, but it’s hard to spend a Top 10 pick on a guy without knowing how he will perform as a starter. His 2019 season could push him squarely into the top three picks or it could push him out of the Top 10 if he struggles in a starting role.Shea Langeliers, C, Baylor: Langeliers is a very good catcher to the point that he would be the top catcher in most draft classes - of course that is because most draft classes don’t have an Adley Rutschman. The Baylor star is a guy with plenty of power and a very good defensive tool set, especially the arm. I’m not sure that Langeliers will ever hit for average, but he should be an asset for a team with his combination of power and defense behind the plate. I also am not sure if he is a guy the Braves would target considering the presence of William Contreras in the system, but if they decided they wanted another catcher this would be the guy.Zach Thompson, LHP, Kentucky: Kentucky lefty Zach Thompson is a guy that a lot of teams like because of his results with quality stuff- stuff that’s simply solid across the board but not overpowering. We are talking about a kid with a career 11.6 K/9 rate and just a 6.2 H/9, the stuff to make hitters swing and miss and limit hits against him. He’s got a lower 90s fastball from the left side with a potentially plus slider, average change, and a curve that is usable as a fourth pitch to help keep hitters off balance. Thompson is not a top of the rotation guy, but he’s a fairly lower risk middle of the rotation potential guy with the biggest risk factors being an elbow injury last spring that limited his season as well as a higher than you’d like walk rate.Tyler Dyson, RHP, Florida: The next Florida Gator pitcher taken in the first round to join a long list of recent Gator first round arms is Tyler Dyson. The right hander was dominant out of the bullpen as a freshman in 2017, but had a bit of an up and down year in his conversion to the rotation in 2018 due to an increased walk rate potentially caused by a shoulder injury. Dyson did settle down and pitch better in three Cape Cod League starts to keep his stock high and with his mid 90s fastball and plus slider, there is a chance for him to push his way into the Top 10 with a strong junior season.Will Holland, SS, Auburn: Will Holland is the type of shortstop teams who covet tools love. He’s got great speed and real power to go with the potential to grow into a strong defender at short. Of course he also strikes out more often than you’d like and still needs a lot of growth defensively to reach his potential in that area. Last year http://www.royalsfanproshop.com/authentic-ryan-goins-jersey , Holland hit 12 homers and went 9-11 in stolen base attempts, but he struck out almost twice as often as he walked (49 times to 28 walks) despite his .406 on base percentage. Holland is a guy that scouts will be watching closely this season as they want to see just how much progress the development of his tools has made in the past year.Bryson Stott, SS, UNLV: Bryson Stott is an interesting guy in that he’s got significant power in his bat, but at the same time he has not always shown it to scouts in game situations like with the US National Team last summer. His UNLV numbers don’t indicate a lot of homers, but he did post 30 doubles in 252 at bats last year to go with his four homers. Stott is a kid with good instincts on the bases that let his speed play up and solid defense at short, making his power potential at short only one of the reasons you would draft him. He will need to show a little more in game power this spring to be a Top 10 pick, but he certainly has that ability.Nick Lodolo, LHP, TCU: Nick Lodolo was the 41st overall pick in 2016 by the Pirates but chose to attend TCU instead of signing. He arguably would have gone even higher in 2016 if he hadn’t given the indication he wanted to go to school and was actually a guy the Braves were considering at that time. He has pitched a lot at TCU and while he has been very consistent (4.35 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 78.2 innings as a freshman and 4.32 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 77 innings as a sophomore), he hasn’t quite pitched like a guy you’d use a Top 10 pick on. The lefty is a projectable 6’6”, 185 pounder who sits 92-95 with a potentially future average curve and good feel for his changeup. He will be a first rounder for sure because of his immense upside, but needs a breakout junior season to be a Top 10 selection.Kameron Misner, OF, Missouri: Kameron Misner is not presently a Top 10 pick on many boards, but he is a high upside bat who could force his way into the Top 10 with a strong spring and at the very least would be a candidate for the 21st pick. Misner is a 6’4”, 220 pound hitter with power and athleticism. He has a chance to hit for both average and power as well as use his athleticism and arm to become an ideal right fielder. The only issue is that Misner hasn’t put it all together quite yet. After a good freshman year Misner seemed to be on track to truly breaking out last spring, but a broken foot limited him to 34 games. He did hit .360/.497/.576 with nine doubles, three triples, four homers, and 13 steals in 19 attempts in addition to walking more than he struck out in his 125 at bats.
