BUFFALO, N. China Jerseys Wholesale .Y. -- First, Ryan Miller. Now, Pat LaFontaine. A day after trading their star goalie to St. Louis, the Buffalo Sabres lost another face of their franchise after LaFontaine abruptly resigned as president of hockey operations on Saturday a little more than three months after being brought in to provide a new direction to the NHLs last-place team. The Sabres announced the decision in a news release issued after speculation had been raised of a potential front-office shake-up involving LaFontaine. "I would like to thank Pat for all he has done for the organization," Sabres owner Terry Pegula said in the release. "Pat joined us at a very difficult time, and helped transition the organization down a new path." The Sabres said LaFontaine would be returning to his previous role working with the National Hockey League. LaFontaine had been working with the league on player safety issues before being hired by the Sabres in mid-November. The former Sabres captains arrival was hailed as a major turning point for a struggling team. LaFontaine took over following a change in the front office during which general manager Darcy Regier and coach Ron Rolston were dismissed following the Sabres 4-15-1 start. LaFontaines first move was hiring former Sabres coach Ted Nolan to take over as coach on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. LaFontaines next step came in January, when he hired Tim Murray as general manager. "Terry Pegula hired me in November, and my primary objective was to lead the Sabres organization through a time of transition," LaFontaine said in the Sabres release. "Im proud of what weve been able to accomplish in a short period of time, and want to thank Terry and Kim Pegula for the opportunity and their support during my time with the Sabres." LaFontaines resignation still comes as a major surprise. In January, LaFontaine talked openly about how he would use his connections to USA Hockey in a bid to lure national and international events to Buffalo. He leaves a day after Murray made his first big splash by trading star goalie Ryan Miller and captain Steve Ott to the St. Louis Blues. In exchange, the Sabres acquired goalie Jaroslav Halak, forward Chris Stewart, prospect William Carrier, a 2015 first-round pick and a conditional 2016 third-round pick in a deal reached in advance of the NHL trade deadline on Wednesday. The Sabres (18-34-8) had the day off on Saturday, and return to practice on Sunday before travelling to play at Dallas on Monday. They remain in last place, but are enjoying their first three-game winning streak following a 4-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Friday. This is not the first time LaFontaine has abruptly stepped down as an NHL team executive. In July 2006, LaFontaine quit the New York Islanders a little over a month after being brought in to serve as senior adviser to owner Charles Wang. In Buffalo, LaFontaines absence was notable this week once the team returned to the ice following the leagues Olympic break. He was not spotted in the press box during the Sabres three-game homestand that began with a 3-2 win over Carolina on Tuesday. That was unusual because LaFontaine had previously spent time watching games from the press-box level in Pegulas box, alongside Murray and several of the owners associates. LaFontaine also missed the teams "Power Play Luncheon" for fans on Friday, when he was scheduled to speak along with fellow former Sabres greats Gilbert Perreault, Rene Robert and Danny Gare. The crowd was informed LaFontaine had the flu. The Sabres have become a top-heavy organization since Regiers dismissal. Pegula created the position of president of hockey operations to hire LaFontaine. And Pegula did so only after LaFontaine declined a chance to become the GM by saying he didnt think he had enough experience for that job. Along with hiring Murray, the Sabres also brought in Hockey Hall of Fame member and long-time executive Craig Patrick to serve as a special adviser. LaFontaine backed the hiring of Murray and Patrick, by referring to both as his "wingers." He also discussed how important it was for him to be building a front-office team that could work together in rebuilding a team that has missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, and not won a playoff round since reaching the 2007 Eastern Conference finals. Its not clear what effect LaFontaines departure will have on the teams short-term future, including Nolans status. Murray said this week hes already had discussions with Nolan about extending his contract beyond this season. Cheap Jerseys . The Cottagers last victory came in a 2-1 home win over West Ham when Rene Meulensteen was still in charge. Since then, a miserable run of seven defeats and two draws has seen the club part with the Dutch coach and replace him with German Felix Magath. China Jerseys Cheap . a€“ All signs point to the Maple Leafs having their top offseason acquisition in the lineup on opening night. https://www.chinasjerseys.com/ .com) - The Carolina Panthers won for the first time in seven games last week, were without Cam Newton due to a car accident this week, but somehow sit atop the much-maligned NFC South.Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Addition by subtraction is a time- honored theory in team improvement. A team gets rid of someone who is either, hurting the team with his attitude, or is standing in the way of someone else, normally younger, and said team thrives. That appears to be the case with the Detroit Pistons. They have gone 7-0 since the shocking release of Josh Smith, a player who has infuriated coaches in the past, but also a player with about $25 million left on his contract. To take such a drastic step as to waive Smith showed how little the Pistons wanted him. Hes mercurial. Truthfully, very little is said about him negatively in terms of being a teammate, or a pain in the posterior. Smiths rap is bad because of his propensity to take too many 3-pointers. Hes a power forward who has played out of position, out of necessity, for both the Pistons and Atlanta Hawks. Smith is an elite athlete and has buckets of talent, but its never truly materialized. And lets be clear, seven consecutive wins since cutting Smith is a reflection on Smith. If the Pistons had won say four games in a row after cutting him, thats not necessarily a true representation of Smith. We could attribute that to the newness of the situation. But, seven? Thats two weeks of perfection. There has to be a reason. How this has all happened, I really dont know, Stan Van Gundy told ESPN.com Van Gundy is not only the coach of the Pistons, but also the president of basketball operations. It was his call to send Smith packing, although, in Tim McMahons piece on ESPN. com, the author clearly states Van Gundy had no problem with Smith off the court, nor his work ethic. What we anticipated was giving different guys opportunities, our young guys. Joshs a 10-year vet in a tough situation at 5-23, and I wanted to give other people opportunities, which was probably going to cut his minutes and take the ball out of his hands some, Van Gundy told ESPN.com. I didnt really think it was fair in that regard. It was easier to do it this way, plus in the future we also get a cap-space benefit, so it helps us for the future. Lets put aside Smith, the personality, for a moment. On the court, this monstrous trio of Smith, Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe was an interesting idea that never worked. Smith and Monroe were both power forwards and Smith had to play small forward. It turned out to be a horrible fit, like me and anything with horizontal stripes. So, the easiest explanation is that re-inserting Monroe into the starting lineup, alongside Kyle Singler at the three spot, is a more natural fit all the way along. You cant emphasize the importance of everyone playing their natural positions. With Singler out there and Monroe on the block and playing like a legitimate force on the interior (15.4 ppg), its opened the floor for the Pistons. They are shooting 40.7 percent from 3-point range during their winning streak. Jodie Meeks return has helped, but his playing time has increased since Smith left. Another factor in stretching the floor has been Jonas Jerebko. Hes averaged 20-plus minutes a game since Smiths departure and is scoring a shade under 6.5 ppg. He is, however, 6-for-12 from beyond the arc. The other revelation has been Brandon Jennings. Hes averaging 19.2 ppg during the win streak, which is a tremendous output. As for Smiths personality, or mere presence, hampering the team, the proof is somewhat in the math. They are 7-0 and their average margin of victory has been 15 points. The wins have come on the road against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who still had LeBron James, albeit a hobbled one, in the lineup. They beat San Antonio on a last-second basket and Dallas in back-to-back nights on the road. Thats extremely impressive. No one on the Pistons is saying anything about Smith, the person, or the teammate. But, it would be naive to ignore the on-court product without him. The Pistons sure seem crisper. Well, weve gotten better on both ends of the floor, Van Gundy said after the win over the Mavericks on Wednesday. The ball is going in the basket that helps quite a bit when the ball goes in. It not only helps obviously forr the reason that the ball goes in and you score a point, but I think it gets your energy up when things are going well. China Jerseys 2020. Weve also defended a lot better. Also our group, I dont know why, but started Dec. 22 we had three days of practice and from then on its just been different. Guys have worked harder, theyve been more attentive. A lot more together and again we dont have guys that are getting concerned about whos in the game or their playing time, or their shots, or anything else. They just want to win games. Thats not a shot at Smith. Van Gundy was commenting on the fact that, in those two wins in San Antonio and Dallas, different players were in the fourth-quarter lineup. You have guys, four guys that were in the game in a great win last night sitting on the bench on the sideline tonight and loving every minute of it, Van Gundy said. You know Greg Monroe didnt get in the game last night in the fourth quarter. Tonight Andre (Drummond) doesnt get in, in the fourth quarter there at the end of the game. Brandon doesnt get back in, KCP doesnt get back in and guys are into the game. Morale is clearly high and confidence means everything. This group is extraordinarily positive and the scenes from the sidelines as Jerebko, Monroe, Caron Butler, Meeks and D.J. Augustin played the entire fourth quarter, and out-scored the Mavs by seven, tell a tale. Theres a spring in the step of the Pistons right now. Its not a coincidence its happened with Smith in a Houston Rockets uniform. It wasnt a good fit. Now, Monroe and Drummond form the interior nucleus. Good 3-point shooters are taking 3-point shots. Its all fitting. Remember this, the Pistons are just 2 1/2 games out of the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. The playoffs are more than in reach, so while Smith may have been a decent guy, his good-bye has the Pistons firing. RANDOM THOUGHTS - At its surface, two first-round picks for Timofey Mozgov seems like a lot. But, both picks werent originally Clevelands so maybe the Cavs feel like its house money. They desperately need a center. Mozgov may not be an athletic, ideal fit, but hes better than nothing. Thats what you want from someone who goes for two first-rounders - hes better than nothing. - The East backcourt situation is tough for the All-Star game. John Wall and Dwyane Wade are going to start, which is not terrible. Kyle Lowry and Jimmy Butler are going. Two guards get selected as reserves, three frontcourt players, then two additional players at any position. Jeff Teague of the Atlanta Hawks and Kemba Walker of the Charlotte Hornets both deserve consideration and the backup frontcourt situation is ... shaky, so maybe one of the two has a chance. - Its no surprise the Memphis Grizzlies want Luol Deng or Jeff Green. Deng probably isnt available, but Green is incredibly available. He has a player option for $9.4 million, which Id imagine hell pick up for next season. What does Boston want? Do they make someone take Gerald Wallace and his $10 million contract for next season? - With the Baseball Hall of Fame on peoples minds, the only interesting first-ballot candidate worth discussing this year is Dikembe Mutombo. Four Defensive Player of the Year awards, eight All-Stars, three times on the All- NBA team makes him a pretty strong choice. Hes curried enough good favor in his lifetime that voters probably put him in this year. No beef from me. - Movie moment - Back to the Future is on peoples minds since 2015 was a year in the trilogy and we clearly arent flying to work via jet pack. But, what always cracked me up, and I love the original and hate the sequels, was how Marty had time to sing another song at the dance. To say his plan was predicated on timing was an understatement. His only chance at traveling TO THE FUTURE, mind you, was based on the exact timing of a lightning strike to a clock tower. Maybe he passes on the encore at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance to make sure everything is exactly where it needs to be for his intricate return home 30 years in the future. - TV moment - I will miss Parenthood. Its a really great show. I hope they dont kill Zeek. ' ' '

Wittmans approach helped turn the Wizards from pushover to playoff winners.BRISBANE, Australia -- Jack Brabham, the three-time Formula One champion who famously pushed his car to the finish line to claim his first season title, died Monday at his Gold Coast home. He was 88. The Australian driver -- known as Sir Jack in racing paddocks around the world after he was knighted in 1979 -- won world titles in 1959 and 1960 and became the only F1 driver to win a world championship in a car of his own construction -- the rear-engined BT19 -- which he drove to the title in 1966. The following year the Brabham team won its second successive world championship when New Zealander Denny Hulme drove the BT20 to victory. Brabham won his final Grand Prix race in South Africa in 1970 before retiring from F1 at the age of 44. Brabham continued to compete at different venues after his F1 retirement and his three sons, Geoff, Gary and David also had professional racing careers. Two of his grandsons, Matthew and Sam, are racing in the U.S. and Britain. "Its a very sad day for all of us," Brabhams youngest son, David, said in a statement. "He lived an incredible life, achieving more than anyone would ever dream of and he will continue to live on through the astounding legacy he leaves behind." The family said Brabham was a brilliant engineer, and technological innovations developed by the Brabham team helped to shape F1. In March 2009, David Brabham helped celebrate a 50-year anniversary for his father. Sebring International Raceway in Florida was the venue where Jack Brabham wrapped up his first Formula 1 championship on Dec. 12, 1959, pushing his Cooper-Climax T51 across the finish line for a fourth-place finish. "I was leading the race right up to the last 500 yards and the car ran out of petrol," Brabham said in an interview with The Associated Press at his home on the Gold Coast, Queensland state, in 2009. "I coasted to about 50 yards away and I pushed the car over the line. If I would have received any assistance I would have been disqualified. I managed to finish fourth, which was enough to win the championship." That race was won by Brabhams close friend, business associate and race-car designer Bruce McLaren of New Zealand. Brabham was not well enough to make the Sebring trip in 2009, but David re-enacted his fathers famous finish and also drove a handful of laps in the same car in which his father won that 1959 championship. Jack Brabhams career accomplishments were lengthy. In addition to his three world titles and 126 races from 1955 to 1970, he won the constructors championship in 1966 and 1967. He had 14 Grand Prix wins and 31 podium finishes. Australian Grand Prix chairman Ron Walker said Brabham would be "remembered as one of motorsports most influential figures" adding that his feat of winning the world championship in a car bearing his own name was unlikely to ever be replicated. "The contributions that Sir Jack made to the sport as wwell as the Australian Grand Prix will never be forgotten and his legacy will continue to resonate among drivers and fans," Walker said. Marquez Valdes-Scantling Super Bowl Jersey. . Born on April 2, 1926, in the southern Sydney suburb of Hurstville, John Arthur Brabham grew up driving and maintaining his fathers fruit and vegetable delivery vehicles. After a brief career in engineering, he joined the Australian Air Force as a flight mechanic and later set up his own engineering works in Sydney and became a pilot. He won four Australian championships between 1948 and 1951. In 1955, Brabham moved to England and teamed up with John and Charles Cooper to make his Grand Prix debut at Aintree, England. He returned to Australia after he retired and his new interests included developing a farm, car dealership and aviation company. He was also a spokesman for a major Japanese automaker and maintained his interest in the sport, visiting numerous major international races. "On track he was always the toughest of tough competitors, tough sometimes to the point at which Id wonder how could such a nice bloke out of a car grow such horns and a tail inside one!" British great Stirling Moss wrote about Brabham in the introduction to a book about one of his biggest race rivals. "If you ever raced against Jack youd really know youd been in a race ... (he) played the game as if your life depends on it, no quarter asked, and absolutely none given. To his natural driving ability he added a deeper technical understanding." "That was a reasonable comment," Brabham told the AP, smiling, when he read the excerpt. Indianapolis Motor Speedway President J. Douglas Boles described Brabham, a four-time Indianapolis 500 starter, as "the patriarch of a racing dynasty." "Every time an Indy car runs at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, you can find roots that trace back to Jack Brabhams rear-engined Cooper Climax T54 that he drove to 9th place in the 1961 Indianapolis 500," Boles said. "In addition to starting the rear-engine revolution at IMS, Brabham competed ... and designed race cars that competed in the 500." Later in life, Brabham suffered from poor hearing and macular degeneration that prevented him from reading road signs, making driving difficult. He said a kidney illness "really clipped my wings," but he lived a busy life in a home overlooking the eighth hole of a resort golf course and sprinkled with mementos of his feats. Those included a glass-encased model replica of the Cooper Climax that he pushed over that Sebring finish line, and photos of the great driver with prime ministers, sporting personalities and fellow competitors. "The big aim now is to go out without an enemy in the world -- Im going to outlive," them he said in the 2009 interview. He is survived by his second wife, Margaret, and his three sons. AP Sports Writer John Pye contributed to this report. ' ' '

Trevone Boykin threw two of his three touchdown passes to Josh Doctson and the sixth-ranked Horned Frogs manhandled the No. 9 Ole Miss Rebels 42-3 in the Peach Bowl. TCU (12-1) felt it was worthy of playing for the national title, but fell from third to sixth in the final playoff rankings despite closing its regular season with a 55-3 rout of Iowa State to earn a share of the Big 12 championship. Boykin was 22-of-31 for 187 yards with three interceptions. Wide receiver Kolby Listenbee opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to Aaron Green and added a touchdown reception. Bo Wallace struggled mightily against a stout Horned Frogs defense. Wallace threw three first-half interceptions, one of which resulted in a TCU touchdown, and fumbled once while completing 10-of-23 passes for 109 yards. The Rebels (9-4), who were held to 129 total yards on offense, had their bowl win streak snapped a six games. Ole Miss entered the contest with the nations No. 1 scoring defense, allowing just 13.8 points per game. Things went downhill quickly for the Rebels as Wallace was picked off by Chris Hackett on the games third play from scrimmage. TCU then grabbed an early lead when Boykin threw a backward pass to Listenbee, who fired down the field to Green for a 31-yard touchdown. After an Ole Miss punt, Green capped a 15-play, 78-yard drive with a 115-yard touchdown run. Chris Board Jersey. The Horned Frogs committed turnovers on consecutive drives later in the first quarter, but the Rebels were unable to get a first down and Gary Wunderlich missed a 52-yard field goal attempt wide left. TCU extended its lead to 21-0 four minutes into the second quarter on Doctsons 12-yard TD grab. Later in the second, Wallace was under pressure in the shadow of his own goal line and threw it away to avoid being sacked for a safety. James McFarland made a diving interception in the end zone to make it 28-0. Following the break, Ranthony Texada returned the opening kickoff of the second half 65 yards to the Ole Miss 34-yard line. Listenbee then went up in tight coverage and came down with the ball on 3rd-and-11 for a touchdown. Just 28 seconds later, Boykin hit Doctson for a 27-yard score after a Wallace fumble. Wunderlich made a 27-yard field goal with 7:18 remaining in the fourth quarter to spoil TCUs shutout bid. TSN Baseball Insider Steve Phillips answers several questions each week. Dave Pacella Jersey Store . This week, topics cover the Toronto Blue Jays and their troubled bullpen, the frequency of Tommy John surgery, Wrigley Fields 100th birthday and the absence of Sammy Sosa, and the Michael Pineda pine tar incident. 1) The Blue Jays bullpen was supposed to be a team strength this season, but it hasnt worked out that way of late. The bullpens overall numbers in the last seven games: 23 2/3 innings pitched, 22 earned runs, 23 hits and 24 walks. Is this just a blip, as manager John Gibbons suggests, or is this a developing problem? Perhaps fatigue is already setting in with the starters not going deep into games very often? How can Gibbons fix it – hes talking about a six-man rotation. Make no mistake about it. The bullpen is the area where general managers make the most mistakes. It is so difficult to quantify the impact of innings worked, pitches thrown and appearance from the preceding season. Each pitcher reacts differently. It is completely unpredictable. Every time you think you know, you dont. The Jays had good reason to feel confident about their bullpen coming to the season as it performed very well last year. I like to look at the bullpen as a living, breathing organism where the head is the closer. When the head is strong the rest of the bullpen has a chance to be strong. When the head is struggling or changing the rest of the bullpen is likely in distress as well. Casey Janssens injury has forced the rest of the bullpen to pitch in different roles. Everyone has moved one notch up the depth chart so to speak. The 6th inning option now pitches in the 7th. The 7th inning options are now appearing in the 8th. And Sergio Santos has moved to the end of the game. The entire bullpens mojo gets affected when this happens. Add to that Santos occasional inconsistency and it puts everyone on edge. Success in the bullpen is contagious but so can be inconsistency. When the bullpen is in disarray and it feels like the manager is guessing whom to use, he probably is. Sometimes managers just search to find a hot hand. John Gibbons best shot of stabilizing his pen is getting a number of consistent scoreless outings from Santos. That will calm the rest of the pen and allow them to get comfortable in their roles. Certainly a healthy Janssen would do the most to realign and stabilize the pen. 2) Tommy John made some public comments this week about the rash of elbow surgeries he made famous. He claims the problem is over-use during development. Is he right? What can the baseball community (and MLB) do to fix the epidemic? The NFL is pushing coaches at all levels to teach kids to tackle properly to reduce concussions, hockey is working to take headshots and hits from behind out of the game. Is there some way MLB can influence grassroots level baseball to reduce the staggering number of pitchers needing TJS – many before they even become professionals? There is an epidemic in baseball today. Fifteen pitchers at the major league level have had Tommy John surgery this season alone. We are only about a month into the season. There is clearly a problem. Pitching arm injuries occur because of poor mechanic and overuse. Unfortunately the overuse is not exclusively a major league problem. Each God-given arm only has so many bullets in it. No matter how perfect ones mechanics may be the arm will break down if it is used too much. The arm was not constructed to throw a baseball. Every time a ball is delivered there is tearing and fraying that takes place in the arm. There is bleeding that takes place. Just like any injury that causes bleeding it takes time to heal. That is why pitchers have four days off typically between starts. That is why managers tend not to want a reliever to throw three days in a row. The wear and tear put on even a well-protected arm will at some point take a toll on a pitcher. Recovery time is important. When I took over as Mets general manager in 1997, one of the first things I did was meet with our team doctors and pitching coaches. We had so many young prospects breaking down and needing surgery. I needed it to stop. Out of that meeting we devised very rigid and strict pitch counts for our minor leaguers. It worked. We dramatically reduced our surgeries. Tommy John is right that we need to do a better job of protecting young arms. Little League has implemented very strict pitch counts for its participants. I fully support that. But this needs to be implemented at every level of the game. One of my sons plays high school baseball and a kid on his team threw 132 pitches last week. That is too many. There are kids playing on multiple teams and they will pitch for one team on Tuesday and the other team on Friday. That is too much. Every year at the College World Series there will be a pitcher who will start a game on one day and then come in relief the next day. That is too much. Some kids play baseball all year round. They never work on different muscles of their body. They never let their body fully recover. That is too much. I dont profess to have all of the answers about parenting for sure. I dont have all of the answers about baseball either. I have four boys and I have encouraged them to play multiple sports. So they play football, basketball and baseball. Their favorite sport depends upon the season of the year. I have found that this has allowed them to develop all of their muscles and allowed their muscles to recover as well, especially in the summer. I also believe that every sport emphasizes something different about character and teamwork. Baseball helps kids learn to deal with failure. It helps with discipline and focus and concentration. Basketball has given them the best sense of team. They have learned how to help and assist teammates. They have learned the importance of technique and fundamentals and how hustle can overcome size (work ethic). Football is the sport where they have learned to expand their limits. They have learned to overcome adversity and deal with pain. They have learned that when they need to dig for more that there is always more there. There is no one right way to do things. Everyones experience is different. Each parents has to do what is right for his or her kids. Sometime I have had to protect my kids from their own ambition and drive because their health was most important. But as parents, lets advocate for our kids physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health before their professional ambitions. 3) Wrigley Field celebrated its 100th anniversary this week. What is your favourite memory/moment at this historic baseball venue? And did the Cubs make a mistake by not inviting Sammy Sosa to the festivities? Despite his fall from grace, many fans and media people were upset that the teams best and most charismatic player in the last 20 years was not there to help celebrate. Wrigley Field is one of my favorite stadiums. It is such an iconic park. There is always a party going on there and there just happens to be baseball being played as well. My most memorable moment at Wrigley Field took place on October 14, 2003. It became known as the Steve Bartman incident. Steve Bartman was a Cubs fan sitting down the left field line who reached for a foul ball, deflecting it and prohibiting Cub left fielder Moises Alou from making the play. It was the 8th inning of Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, with Chicago ahead 3–0 and holding a 3 games to 2 lead in the best-of-7 series. The Florida Marlins went on to score eight runs in that inning and won 8-3. They won Game 7 as well and went on to win the World Series. Poor Steve Bartman. Poor Cubs fans. The Cubs celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the stadium with many of the most heralded Cubs players from the past in attendance. The glaring omission was Sammy Sosa. He wasnt invited. Cubs spokesman Julian Green said, "There are some things Sammy needs to look at and consider prior to having an engagement with the team." It is suspected that Sosa was one of the 100+ players that tested positive for PEDs in 2003 anonymous testing program. Plus at the end of the 2004 season he clashed with the organization and sat out the final game of the season, leaving Wrigley Field before the game was over. That obviously rubbed the organization the wrong way and they traded him in the off-season to Baltimore. My experience is that life is too short to hold grudges. Sosa has acknowledged he needs to make amends to the Cubs. Living a life of recovery I understand that making amends doesnt exclusively mean to apologize. It means that Sosa needs to own and take responsibility for his behavior as a Cub. All of it. He needs to acknowledge where he was wrong. I have also learned that resentments dont do anybody any good. But I learned too, that if I have a resentment, I need to find what my part is in that resentment. That more often than not when I am resentful of someone else I have some blame in the issue too. Sosa needs to own his part but so do the Cubs. Maybe the Cubs role in the problem was their lack of boundaries and accountability for a star like Sosa. Maybe they treated Sosa a certain way and he came to expect that. Maybe they stuck their head in the sand about some things that should have been confronted. My experience is that when there is a problem with a relationship that both sides have a role in the problem. The best resolution is when both parties acknowledge their role. It sounds like Sosa is willing to own his part, maybe the Cubs will too. Both sides need to point thumbs at themselves instead of fingers at the other. It would have been nice to address this before the anniversary celebration. But better late than never. 4) On Thursday Major League Baseball handed down a 10-game suspension for Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda for "possessing a foreign substance on his person during the bottom of the second inning of his clubs Wednesday, April 23rd game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park." Pineda had a big blob of pine tar on his neck in that second inning and it was a violation of baseball rule 8.02, which states, "The pitcher shall not apply a foreign substance of any kind to the ball." This was the second time that we know Pineda has used pine tar on the mound. He was seen with pine tar on the base of his pitching hand in a game against the Red Sox on April 10. However, in that game Pineda was alerted that the television cameras had focused on the dark stain on his hand and he had washed it off before anyone confronted the issue. When asked after that game, he claimed the mark on his hand was just dirt. It was clearly pine tar. He had dodged a bullet that day. So why did Pineda use the pine tar? Was he trying to get the ball to move in abnormal ways? Was he cheating? Let me first say that if there is a rule in place it should be enforced. Pineda got caught and he deserves a 10-game suspension. What he did was either very arrogant or very dumb. Take your pick. How he ever thought that lathering pine tar on his neck, in a major league stadium, with cameras everywhere, made sense, I will never know. I mean he knew all eyes would be on him as he escaped capture in his previous game against the Red Sox. He didnt even try to hide the illegal substance. Put it behind your belt. Put it under the flap of your spikes. How about under the brim of the cap? No, he went in the dugout and put it on his neck. That is absurd. Pineda used the pine tar because he couldnt grip the baseball in the cold weather. You know that feeling when you are in the cold and your hands dry up a bit and feel very slick. It is very difficult to grip a baseball when that happens. In the first inning of the game on Wednesday, Pineda could not control his pitches. The ball was slipping out of his hand. It was especially problematic when he tried to throw a slider. Pine tar gives a pitcher a much better grip on the ball and allows him to manipulate it with his fingers to get the ball to move. It allows him to deliver the pitch in a way that he would be able to otherwise if not for the cold weather conditions. The pine tar does not allow the pitcher to make the ball move in extraordinary ways, just ordinary ways. Red Sox manager John Farrell said after the game that he fully respects a pitcher trying to get a grip on the ball but Pineda left him no choice but to confront it as "it was on his neck." Even Yankees manager Joe Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman acknowledged that Farrell had to approach the umpire to check on Pineda. It does make you wonder what conversation the Yankees had with the young man after the first pine tar incident two weeks ago. If they didnt tell him not to use it, then they should have told him to hide it better. If it wasnt so obvious I dont think Farrell would have challenged it. But he had it on his neck. Farrell knew that by confronting Pineda he was opening up challenges to his pitchers possibly cheating as well. Red Sox starter Jon Lester was seen with pine tar on his glove last year in the playoffs and fellow starter Clay Buchholz was seen applying sunscreen to his arms in Toronto on a day the roof was closed. Baseball Rule 8.2, which prohibits the use of foreign substances by a pitcher, was put in place so pitchers would not use spit or Vaseline on the ball. Slippery substances can make the ball move in extraordinary ways. Make no mistake about it, pine tar is considered illegal because it is a foreign substance but it is not the product that the rule is trying to prohibit. There are currently many pitchers in the majors who use pine tar, even though it is a violation of a rule. At every game in every stadium there is a bag of rosin behind the pitchers mound. Rosin is a substance that helps dry sweat or liquid on a pitchers hand and allows for a better grip. In the heat of the summer a pitcher can work up a sweat. You can often see pitchers grab the bag between pitches to ensure the grip of the ball. What is the difference between rosin and pine tar? The only difference is that pine tar is better for grip in the cold weather and rosin is better in the warm weather. Yet, rosin is approved while pine tar is illegal for the pitcher. It makes no sense. I would like to propose a rule that I would like to call the "Pineda Rule." This rule will allow a pine tar rag to be placed next to the rosin bag at the back of the mound. It will do away with consistent violation of rule 8.02. Plus it will make hitters safer as pitchers will better be able to command the ball in cold weather. Sometimes we need to see something ridiculous to prompt change. Thank you Michael Pineda for that hickey-sized glob of pine tar on your neck. Coach Michel Therrien said on a conference call on Sunday that his team was happy to be home from Boston with a split of the opening two games of the best-of-seven NHL Eastern Conference second round series. The Canadiens pulled out a 4-3 overtime win in the series opener on Thursday, but let a lead slip away under relentless Bruins pressure in a 5-3 defeat on Saturday afternoon at the TD Garden. The third and fourth games will be played Tuesday and Thursday respectively at the Bell Centre. "We went to play two games where its tough for any team to play in the NHL and were out of there with the series tied," said Therrien. "Thats the big picture. "I think its a boost of confidence for our players that were able to compete with that team and play with that team. And one thing for sure, playing at the Bell Centre, with the fans and support weve got, is a tough place for the other team to play. Im sure the players will feed off our fans." The Canadiens were given the day off Sunday and will practice Monday at their suburban training centre to prepare for Game 3. While the Canadiens took home ice advantage away from Boston, the Bruins looked to have grabbed momentum in the series with four third-period goals. "Momentum, yes its a part of hockey, but theres nothing you can do about the past," said Therrien. "Whats important is the moment. "Our preparation for the next game has alreaady started. He denied that the Canadiens were nursing a lead in the third period before the Bruins stormed back. He said Boston had only one scoring chance in the third 10 minutes and scored on their first real chance of the final frame. Defenceman Josh Gorges said the players want to put Game 2 behind them. "Theres no sense in celebrating too much after a win or beating yourself up after a loss," he said. "It doesnt do anything for you for the next game. We know where we stand. We know we have to be better." Therrien would not discuss any potential lineup changes. He said winger Brandon Prust, who looks to be struggling, is "totally healthy" and that he liked what he saw from rookie winger Michael Bournival, who returned to the lineup after sitting out a game in favour of veteran Travis Moen. "He had a really good first round,"said Therrien, who used Bournival in every game of an opening round sweep of the Tampa Bay Lightning. "We put him back in the lineup. I wanted to use his speed. I thought he did a good job with (Tomas) Plekanec." Therrien also said he hopes that popular singer Ginette Reno would be back to sing the Canadian anthem in Game 3. The Canadiens scored early after she sang in both home games against the Lightning. "Wed welcome her with open arms," he said. ' ' '

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins have added Paul Molitor to their coaching staff, assigning him supervision of the teams base running, bunting, infield instruction and positioning as well as assistance with in-game strategy. Pervis Atkins . This is not some token job for a prominent, popular former player. All of those areas need a lot of work, so Molitor is going to be busy. "Hes certainly got a history and knowledge and a high baseball IQ," general manager Terry Ryan said. "Theres no doubt about that. It fits pretty good here." The hire was announced Tuesday by the Twins, who finished 66-96 for the second straight season after going 63-99 the year before that. "Theres really no part of the game that we cant do better at," Molitor said, adding: "Im going to be able to work on guys who need to have a small-ball game, with the things they can do, with ways to score runs. I think thats kind of a lost art. Guys worry so much about getting on base, but they forget how to score and how to pick up 90 feet. While it wasnt horrible, I think it certainly could be better." Since 2005, Molitor has served as a minor league base running and infield co-ordinator for the organization. The last three of his 21 major league seasons as a player came with the Twins until his retirement in 1998. The 57-year-old grew up in nearby St. Paul, attending the same high school where Joe Mauer later starred and then playing for the University of Minnesota before his professional career was launched with Milwaukee and extended with Toronto. The seven-time All-Star is one of six players in history with at least 3,000 hits and 500 stolen bases. Molitor was a candidate to be Minnesotas manager in 2002 after Tom Kelly retired, but he withdrew during the unsettling process during which Major League Baseball tried to eliminate the franchise before being blocked in court. The job went to Ron Gardenhire, who has held it since then and received a new two-year contract last month. All of Gardenhires assistants were brought back, too, so the position for Molitor on staff is new. "I appreciate that hes respected my input in spring training when hes had me come down there as an extra coach those first few weeks the past several years," Molitor said. "Weve talked again often. Its going to be a chance for us to take that kind of to another level in how were going to work together, as me being as part of his staff." Gardenhire neednt look over his shoulder, Ryan said. The idea to hire Molitor was Gardenhires, actually. "Gardy has no reason to worry about his job," Ryan said, adding: "I didnt want to be perceived as hiring Molitor as a manager-in-waiting. Thats not true. Were adding him to our staff to make us better." Molitor didnt dismiss eventual interest in becoming a manager. But he didnt sound ready to think about it. "Im sure therell be some questions regarding that. Theres been a lot of speculation even over the last season about Gardys potential future, and I just dont think that I can really say anything other than this is going to be invaluable for me in terms of getting back into a major league situation and continuing to gain experience and maybe learning more about what I want my future to be," Molitor said. Third baseman Trevor Plouffe tweeted after the news was announced: "Wow, so stoked to see Molitor join our staff! Hes one of the most knowledgeable baseball men Ive ever met." Ryan was glad to hear that. "Thats kind of music to my ears because Im hoping we can get Trevor going. Hes got the capability to be a pretty good player. This year wasnt what we were hoping," Ryan said. NOTES: The Twins announced that closer Glen Perkins had arthroscopic surgery on Oct. 1 on the medial meniscus cartilage in his right knee. T.J. McConnell was nearly perfect from the floor and finished with 16 points and six assists as No. 10 Arizona bested No. 8 Utah 69-51 at McKale Center. McConnell connected on all but two of his 10 shots and made sure the Wildcats (16-2, 4-1 Pac-12) stayed competitive early. Arizonas big men, namely Stanley Johnson, took over after the break. Johnson scored all 18 of his points in the second half and pulled down nine rebounds for a frontcourt that owned a staggering 40-19 edge on the glass and a 34-14 advantage in the paint. Brandon Ashley chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds as the Wildcats ran their home winning streak to 32 games. Brandon Taylor shot 4-of-7 from behind the arc and totaled 12 points for Utah (14-3, 4-1), which won their previous seven games by an average of 23 points. The Utes jumped out to a 10-2 lead when Delon Wright banked in a 3-pointer and Taylor hit one from roughly 10 feet behind the arc. They were shooting 5-for-7 from the field over the first seven minutes, but went 11-of-34 (32.4 percent) the rest of the way. Conversely, the Wildcats missed six of their first sevenn shots before McConnell going them going with back-to-back jumpers. Scott Gudmundson. . Ashleys strong post move gave Arizona its first lead with under six minutes left in the first half, and McConnell, usually a pass-first guard, capped his 12-point half with a late jumper that sent the hosts into the locker room with a 31-26 advantage. A three-point contest turned into a rout thanks to Arizonas 17-3 flurry in the early stages of the second half. Johnson scored the first nine points in a variety of ways -- a 3-pointer, a tip-in of his own miss, a dunk and two free throws -- and two more free throws from Johnson made it a 52-35 game with under 12 minutes to play. Jordan Loveridge made three 3-pointers over the next five minutes to pull Utah within 57-47, but Arizona answered with the next 11 points to end any chance of a comeback. Six of those points resulted from offensive rebounds, and Ashley highlighted the late surge with a emphatic two-handed dunk. Game Notes Arizona had nearly as many offensive boards (17) as Utah did total rebounds ... The Wildcats managed 18 second-chance points to Utahs three ... Coming off a loss, the Winnipeg Jets are holding on to the positives heading into a home matchup against the New Jersey Devils. Brandon Jones Jersey Store . You can watch all the action LIVE on TSN3. Coverage begins at 8pm et/5pm pt. The Jets are opening a three-game homestand following a 2-2-1 trip that concluded with Sundays 4-3 overtime loss to Minnesota. However, coach Paul Maurice came away encouraged after Winnipegs three-goal, third-period rally forced the extra session. Im really, really proud the way they handled a couple of real bad breaks there in the first period that would have shattered most teams, Maurice said. We got a little snarl on and fought our way back. Like the Devils, the Jets could use some improvement on the power play, which ranks 28th in the NHL at 9.7 percent after coming up empty on eight chances Sunday. Andrew Ladd, who netted the tying goal Sunday, has two of Winnipegs six power-play tallies, and his seven overall trail only Blake Wheelers eight. Ladd has four goals and one assist in his last three home meetings with New Jersey. Cory Schneiders presence in net and a sluggish power play are the only recent consistencies for the Devils. With Schneider likely to tie a franchise record for consecutive starts, the Devils are hoping the potential return of Adam Henrique can get the power play going Tuesday night in Winnipeg. Schneider has started all 18 games for the Devils (8-8-2), compiling a 2.71 goals-against average while going 8-7-2. That streak could be in jeopardy during this four-game trip through Western Canada after New Jersey recalled veteran backup Scott Clemmensen from Albany of the AHL. Clemmensen, though, allowed four goals on 17 shots in two appearances before being shipped to the minors earlier this month. Schneiders 1.64 GAA while winning two of three career meetings with the Jets (9-7-3) may be reason enough to give him the nod as the Devils start an eight-game stretch with seven on the road. He had 24 saves and turned aside three shootout attempts in a 2-1 home win Oct. 30. Another start would tie Martin Brodeurs team record of 19 straight to begin 2001-02. Schneider is already the first goaltender to get the call this many times to start a season since 2007-08, when Evgeni Nabokov started the first 43 for San Jose and Miikka Kiprusoff went 23 straight for Calgary. Schneider had 26 saves Saturday, but gave up two unanswered goals 4:37 apart in the third period in a 3-2 loss to Colorado. I thought he was excellent, coach Pete DeBoer said. He let in two goals. I thought he was good. I didnt think fatigue was an issue. He looked good all night. This ones not on him. DeBoer has more concerns with the power play, which has scored on only 1 of 21 chances during New Jerseys 2-5-0 stretch. The unit was 10 for 38 through the first 11 games. (The) power play has been a little bit of an issue, DeBoer said after the power play went 0 for 2 versus the Avalanche. Thats something that we have to get better at. We could have used a power play goal. That would have been the difference (and) we couldnt find one. Perhaps having Henrique back will help. The center is traveling with the team after missing six games with an undisclosed injury, and hes scored two of his four goals on the man advantage. He had seven power-play goals last season and led the Devils with a career-high 25 overall. Henrique, though, hasnt found the net in his last six meetings with Winnipeg. ST. Tramon Williams Super Bowl Jersey . LOUIS - St. Louis upped its bid Friday to either keep the Rams or lure a new NFL team, unveiling plans for a new open-air football stadium on the banks of the Mississippi River, not far from the Gateway Arch. The 64,000-seat stadium would cost $860 million to $985 million, with construction beginning in 2016 and ending by 2020.The proposal was announced by attorney Robert Blitz and former Anheuser-Busch president David Peacock, a team appointed by Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon in November to develop the plan. The NFL and the team would be responsible for up to half the cost of the stadium, while some funding would come from tax credits and other public financing, including possibly extending current bonds used to pay off the Edward Jones Dome, where the Rams play. But city and state leaders have long said there is no appetite for again tapping taxpayers, which is reflected in the plan that calls for no new taxes or bonds. Seat licensing fees would also help pay for the project. Its more than just a football stadium, Peacock said. Were talking about a continuation of the revitalization of our downtown.St. Louis is trying to avoid becoming a two-time loser of NFL franchises, as the Cardinals left for Arizona in 1987. Blitz said Nixon sought a new stadium plan so that this history does not repeat itself here in St. Louis. The Edward Jones Dome is outdated by NFL standards despite being just 20 years old. Negotiations over improvements to the dome — which was built with taxpayer money — went nowhere in recent years. The Rams 30-year lease will be on a year-to-year basis starting next season because of a clause that the stadium be among the top quarter of NFL venues.Speculation is rampant in St. Louis that Rams owner Stan Kroenke will move the team to Los Angeles, the nations second-largest market, in 2016. The league has said no team movement will be allowed this year. Those concerns escalated Monday when Kroenke was announced as part of a joint venture building an 80,000-seat stadium in the Los Angeles suburbs. The new stadium plan has been shared with NFL officials and the Rams, Peacock said, but he has not spoken directly with Kroenke. Phone messages left with Kroenkes office were not returned. The Rams said in a statement that theyll review the new plan and speak with states stadium task force, and added that the team has worked for many years, with several agencies and commissions, and their senior management, responsible for stadium facilities in St. Louis.St. Louis city leaders have been frustrated with Kroenke, saying hes refused to return their calls. Much of the effort to either keep the team or attract another is being conducted directly with the league, not the team or Kroenke.City leaders and civic boosters say St. Louis has a compelling argument to remain an NFL city: It is the nations 20th largest market, with a loyal fan base that sold out every game from the teams arrival in 1995 until its 11 straight losing seasons — which along with uncertainty about the future — soured some fans. The new stadium would be built in a largely blighted area, making it eligible for various tax credits, Peacock said. Just north of the Gateway Arch on the northwest edge of downtown, the stadium would be surrounded by a 10,000-space parking lot that provides an area for tailgating. The stadium also could help attract a Major League Soccer franchise, Peacock said. The plan also calls for upgrading the Edward Jones Dome, making it more attractive for large conventions. This proposal would not only protect St. Louiss status as an NFL city, it would also provide the opportunity to redevelop underutilized areas of the city and create jobs, Nixon said in a statement Friday.City and state leaders agree there is no appetite for new public funding. Nixon has said no new taxes or fees would be used for the new stadium, but has hinted that the 30-year bonds issued for the domes construction could be extended. The state of Missouri pays $12 million annually toward the debt; the city and St. Louis County pay $6 million each.Peacock and Blitz have NFL ties. Peacock worked directly with the league on advertising and marketing while at Anheuser Busch, and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame advisory board. Blitz was part of the legal team that helped bring the Rams to St. Louis and is legal counsel to the St. Louis Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority. We are an NFL city. Hendricks, who lost a controversial split decision to St-Pierre at UFC 167 last November, fights again for the 170-pound crown on Saturday when he faces veteran (Ruthless) Robbie Lawler at UFC 171. The 32-year-old St-Pierre vacated the title in December, saying he needed time away from the sport. St-Pierre has been making the most of his time off, travelling and speaking his mind about what he believes needs to be fixed in the world of mixed martial arts. But he remains close to the sport and says he will be watching the UFC 171 main event in Dallas. "Its a fight where anything can happen," St-Pierre told The Canadian Press. "Both guys can put each other to sleep. They have a lot of power in striking, but I believe Hendricks has the edge in this fight because I believe he will come more well-prepared with his team and hes got an edge in the grappling department." Hendricks (15-2) is a former two-time NCAA wrestling champion. St-Pierre (25-2) left a 12-fight winning streak and a string of UFC records behind him. But he says it wont be strange seeing someone else have his belt strapped around their waist. "No, because it was my choice to give away the title. It was my choice so I dont regret anything. St-Pierre, who had held the UFC title since regaining it from Matt (The Terror) Serra at UFC 83 in April 2008, says the outcome of the fight will not affect whether he returns to the sport. "I dont plan on coming back right now," he said. "First if I come back, it will be when I want. I have a lot of things to do. And also a couple things need to change if I come back. ... Whoever wins, I dont care. I just watch it as a fan." Since leaving the sport, St-Pierre has spoken out about the need to have more stringent drug testing. The Montreal fighter — who was the UFCs biggest pay-per-view draw — has also complained about the UFC having a monopoly. Hendricks has said he sees Lawler (22-9 with one no contest) as a more dangerous opponent that St-Pierre. "Robbie, if you make a mistake, weve seen it time and time again that he can knock you out." The 30-year-old Hendricks is the top-ranked contender in the 170-pound division while Lawler is No. 3. No. 2 Carlos (The Natural Born Killer) Condit, who lost to St-Pierre in a UFC 154 title shot and was beaten by Hendricks at UFC 158, takes on No. 11 Tyron Woodley (12-2) in the UFC 171 co-main event. Condit (29-7) says he has been told a win will earn him another title shot. Hendricks is currently No. 10 in the UFCs pound-for-pound rankings. ' ' '

Fresh off earning his second Olympic gold medal, Sidney Crosby will get back to work for the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight when they host the Montreal Canadiens at CONSOL Energy Center. Mecole Hardman Jersey . Viewers in the Canadiens region can watch the action unfold on TSN Canadiens at 7pm et/8pm at. The game can also be heard on TSN Radio 690 at 7pm et/8pm at. Crosby famously delivered the overtime game-winner for Team Canada in the 2010 gold medal game against the United States, but unlike four years ago in Vancouver the Canadians didnt need a dramatic finish to repeat as Olympic champions. Montreal will try to bounce back from a loss in its first game after the Olympics. The Canadiens were handed a 2-1 overtime loss by visiting Detroit on Wednesday to have a three-game winning streak halted. The Habs did not have No. 1 goaltender Carey Price for their first game back after he suffered a lower-body injury at practice on Wednesday morning. Price, who also will miss tonights game, anchored Team Canada in its gold medal run in Sochi, posting a 5-0 record, a 0.59 goals against average and .972 save percentage. Peter Budaj started on Wednesday and he stopped 28 shots before allowing Detroits Gustav Nyquist to score with just 27.3 seconds remaining in OT. Budaj well get the call between the pipes again this evening. The Canadiens still managed to notch a point thanks to Brian Giontas game- tying tally with just 28.7 seconds left in regulation. "In the third we started to pressure their D a little more and it paid off in the end," Gionta said. "In the first two periods, they were able to come through out of their zone quite easily." Budaj could get another start tonight for the Habs. Montreal also recalled Dustin Tokarski from its AHL affiliate in Hamilton on Wednesday to take Prices place on the roster. The Canadiens and Penguins have split a pair of games so far this season, but Pittsburgh has won four of five and seven of its last nine meetings with Montreal. The Habs, who are playing five of their next six games on the road, have dropped five straight in the Steel City. Pittsburgh returns from the break with a healthy 16-point lead atop the Metropolitan Division, but the club still has injury concerns to deal with. Defenseman Kris Letang is still out due to a stroke suffered prior to the Olympics. Fellow blueliner Paul Martin is out for at least a month after injuring his hand while representing the U.S. in Sochi. The Pens were 4-1-1 in their final six outings before the Olympics. The clubs next game will be played outdoors when Pittsburgh visits the Chicago Blackhawks for Saturdays game at Soldier Field, home of the NFLs Chicago Bears. Maurices Jets welcome Coyotes to MTS Centre The Winnipeg Jets have thrived under Paul Maurice despite injury limiting Evander Kane to just four games under the new head coach. Kane is expected to return to the lineup tonight when the Jets face the Phoenix Coyotes. Viewers in the Jets region can watch the action live on TSN Jets at 6:30pm ct/7:30pm et. The game can also be heard on TSN Radio 1290 at 7pm ct/8pm et. Winnipeg has gone 9-3-1 in 13 games since replacing Claude Noel with Maurice, who made his coaching debut with the club in a 5-1 win over the Coyotes on Jan. 13. Ondrej Pavelec made 18 saves and the Jets got goals from five different players to beat the Coyotes for a second straight time following a six-game series losing streak. The Jets have also won both of their meetings at home versus the Coyotes since relocating from Atlanta. Coincidentally, the Coyotes franchise used to call Winnipeg home before moving to Phoenix prior to the 1996-97 season. The current Jets have endured just one losing streak under Noel, a current two-game slide that includes a shootout setback to St. Louis in the final game before the Olympic break. Kane missed the last six games with a hand infection and has been limited to just four games since Jan. 7 due to injury. He has 15 goals and 29 points in 42 games this season. The fourth overall pick of the 2009 draft is likely to skate on a line tonight with Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele. "I want him to play his game in our framework," Maurice said of what he wants to see out of Kane. "Thats what Im asking from everybody. Keep the individual things that make you special, just fly in formation, especially when we dont have the puck." The Jets come in with 62 points, two fewer than the Coyotes, who trail the Vancouver Canucks by just one point for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference. Phoenix also is six points behind Los Angeles for third place in the Pacific Division. Consistency has been an issue for the Coyotes, who lost their final game before the Olympic break and are 4-5-1 since last winning back-to-back games on Jan. 16 and 18. Phoenix returns five players to its roster who competed in the Sochi Olympics, including goaltender Mike Smith, who won a gold medal with Team Canada even though he did not get into a game during the tournament. "I knew going over there that thered be a good possibility that I wouldnt get into a game," Smith told Phoenixs website. "I was just doing everything I could to be a part of the team and kind of keep the dressing room light and get to know a lot of the guys I play against (in the NHL)." Like the Coyotes, Smith has had an up-and-down season, going 20-17-9 with a 2.77 goals against average and .913 save percentage. Smith yielded all five goals on 38 shots in the earlier loss to the Jets, falling to 7-6-0 with a 2.53 GAA against the franchise. Pavelec is 2-1-1 in his career versus the Coyotes, posting a 1.73 GAA. Granlund, Ortio to make NHL debuts as Flames host Kings Fourteen points out of a playoff spot and considered a team still rebuilding, the Calgary Flames may feature a number of new faces down the stretch of the season. That will be the case tonight when a pair of players make their NHL debuts in a clash with the Los Angeles Kings. Watch the game live on TSN at 9:30pm et/6:30pm pt. Goaltender Joni Ortio and forward Markus Granlund are both expected to play tonight for the Flames after putting together solid campaigns so far with the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League. The 20-year-old Granlund, a 2011 second-round pick of the Flames, has netted 23 goals and 44 points in 50 games with the Heat. He is expected to center the fourth line between Paul Byron and Kevin Westgarth. "You can play only one first NHL game, so Im just going to try and enjoy the game," said Granlund. Ortio, who like Granlund hails from Finland, is 20-6-0 in 28 games with the Heat this season, posting an impressive 2.22 goals against average. His start tonight will give Swiss Reto Berra some extra time to recover after having traveled to Sochi, Russia for the Olympics. Flames goaltender Karri Ramo is currently out with a sprained right MCL, opening the door for Ortio to debut along with Granlund. "Its exciting. Im happy that we get to make our debut at the same time," Ortio grinned. "Its a fun coincidence and its going to be fun." The Flames sit 14 points out of a wild card spot despite winning six of eight going into the Olympic break. They have managed to beat the Kings twice already this season in Los Angeles and will try to defeat the club at home for the first time in five encounters. The Kings will play their second game following the Olympic break, having bested the hosting Colorado Avalanche 6-4 last night. Anze Kopitar had two goals and an assist, while Justin Williams and Jeff Carter helped the rally with a goal and an assist each. Kopitar and Carter scored 2:04 apart in the second period to tie the game at 4-4 and Kopitars power-play goal 3:13 into the third frame put his club ahead for good. "Those two quick (goals) at the end of the second were huge and we carried that momentum into the third," Kopitar said. "Its nice to start off the third with a power play." Robyn Regehr and Jarret Stoll also lit the lamp as the Kings have won two straight following a four-game slide. They did so by scoring six goals, nearly half the output of the 15 goals they had scored in their previous 11 games. Backup Martin Jones stopped 25-of-29 shots in the victory, giving No. 1 goaltender Jonathan Quick some more rest after Quick served as the starting netminder for Team USA in the Olympics. Quick may start tonight and is 8-5-1 with a 1.62 GAA and .935 save percentage in 14 previous meetings with the Flames. The Orioles said they had concerns with his physical. Balfour proclaimed hes healthy and looking forward to helping Tampa Bay get back to the playoffs. "Im 100 per cent healthy," Balfour said, adding he had more lucrative offers from other teams but was eager to play for a perennial contender and return to the Tampa Bay area, where he still resides after spending time with the Rays from 2007-10. "Ive had an eventful off-season to say the least," he said. "Its always been a place on my radar. Ill be honest, I never wanted to leave here." Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg made the announcement at a news conference held following a team sponsorship event at the Tampa Museum of Art. He called it a significant move for the budget-minded Rays, who have made the playoffs four times in the past six seasons despite one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. Sternberg noted the team did not enter the off-season expecting to be in a position to pursue the 36-year-old, who was 62 for 67 in save opportunities the past two seasons with the Oakland Athletics. ";Weve have had some exceptional teams," Sternberg said, explaining the decision to spend above the teams projected payroll. Cameron Erving Jersey. "We want to give this organization the best chance to win, and we know its going to cost us more than we can afford to pay." In his first stint with the Rays, Balfour was part of an improbable run to the 2008 World Series, where Tampa Bay lost to Philadelphia in six games. Sternberg called him a "known quantity" for the Rays. Manager Joe Maddon added the signing will make an already impressive bullpen even more formidable. "He wants to go back to the World Series," Maddon said. "So do we, so do I." Balfour was a first-time All-Star in 2013, when he had a 1.63 ERA while going 25 for 25 in save opportunities the first half of the season. The right-handers 383 appearances, 380 1-3 innings and 410 strikeouts over the past six years are the second-most among AL relievers. Hes first Australian-born pitcher to make an All-Star team and has been a part of five teams that made the playoffs, including two with Tampa Bay. "I want to win a World Series," he said. Ive also trained some pro football and hockey players. The thing that is the same in all cases is that everyone wants to maximize their effort. Nothing replaces a good diet. The supplement industry is a billion dollar industry, even the biggest giants in this will not suggest they replace a solid diet. Quality supplements are there to enhance and improve every session you have. My goal this week is to open up the discussion on supplements. The training schedule I have is intense, and its being done in a gym with all kinds of athletes. I sat down with Cellucor brand ambassador, registered massage therapist, published Bikini Model and amazing clean eating cook Crissy Zachanowich. Figure athletes, body builders, and bikini models take lean muscle mass preservation, and the scientific use of supplements to the next level. We discussed three key supplements. Easy to use, and definite must haves when the training gets intense. Simply called a “pre-workout”, athletes and people hitting the gym have turned these supplements into the largest portion of most companies profits. Youll see most of them are stimulant based. Often caffeine and synephrine are used to energize an athlete before the workout. In addition, youll see creatine in the hopes of capturing its potential power and strength boosting. Beta-Alanine will often be present to buffer against lactic acid (Huge for me when my Coach Jeff Fisher puts me on the Jacobs Ladder) and finally, Arginine for blood circulation. Everything in the pre-workout is naturally available, its just concentrated. For the arginine, youd have to eat about a pound of almonds before your workout. During the workout, branch chain amino acids are key. When your body starts to hit the wall, and you have pushed your limits, protein is broken down to be a fuel. Thats right, precious muscle tissue is broken down to fuel your fight. Stitched China Jerseys. Its broken down into branch chain amino acids. Those are converted to sugar, and you get more energy to work harder. Drinking BCAAs tricks the body into sparing muscle, and athletes everywhere rejoice. Post workout protein, or simply a protein shake to ensure the body is in a positive nitrogen balance. Meaning, your body has enough protein that it is creating muscle, boosting immunity, and creating all the cells and hormones you need to be in that “beast mode”. You can get all the protein you need from meals and real food. However, its a lot easier to drink a shake. Ive been drinking some amazing treats lately thanks to Crissy. Protein powder has come a long way. Red Velvet Cake? Cookies and Cream? Cinnamon Swirl? These all exist and taste as good as they sound. It makes the hour in the gym worth the reward of the post workout shake. Two things to remember after reading this. First, if you are not working out to your max, you dont need to supplement. Go online, or pop over to my youtube channel and watch some pro athletes train. There is sweat on the floor, and exercises to failure. Again, its the reason Im at Elite Performance in Winnipeg. That atmosphere, and the push to be your absolute best. If you arent doing that, then supplements are not critical. Second, your diet needs to be perfected and cared for. If its not, what are you “supplementing”? Try some new workouts and put all your effort into them. Then try some of the amazing science thats out there. Trust me when I tell you, they make that difference in recovery that gets you through the week and ready for your rest days. Get in the gym, get training, and get an appreciation for what it takes to perform at a pro level. Do it to appreciate every sport a little more, especially the most demanding sport out there, MMA. This week they discuss Kyle Lowrys All-Star blessing, Coach Q, unheralded undraftees and leaving the NFL playoffs alone. Cathal Kelly, Toronto Star: My thumb is up to the 14 NBA coaches who decided this week that raptor Kyle Lowry doesnt deserve to be on the All-Star team. Theyre wrong, of course. Badly wrong. According to reports, the player who pipped Lowry for the last bench spot was Brooklyn Nets forward Joe Johnson. Lowry is out-averaging Johnson in every statistical category - including rebounds - and Johnson is seven inches taller. In making this mistake, however, those coaches have done Raptors fans a huge service. From here until the end of the season, Toronto not only has the best point guard in the East, they now have the most motivated point guard in the East. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is up to Joel Quenneville of the Chicago Blackhawks, who this week moved up to No. 3 on the all-time list of coaching victories in the National Hockey League. Its impressive enough to make the top three. Its even more impressive when the only coaches ahead of you in wins are named Scotty Bowman and Al Arbour. Quenneville, for some reason, doesnt get a whole lot of attention, doesnt make a lot of headlines, rarely gets mentioned for coach of the year, which he won once more than a decade ago. But here he is behind a nine-time Stanley Cup champion and a four-time Cup winner. And nobody else. Yeah, hes an all-time ggreat. Jason Spriggs Super Bowl Jersey. And when have we ever said that about Joel Quenneville? Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is up to Edmonton goalie Ben Scrivens, for impenetrability. Scrivens stopped a record 59 shots in a shutout of the Sharks, a dash of good news in a city unaccustomed to seeing a goalie make 59 saves in a week. Scrivens stellar game underscored the notion that goalies dont need pedigree. Undrafted out of Cornell, Scrivens once played in the East Coast Hockey League. Ex-Calgary Hitman netminder Martin Jones of the Los Angeles Kings, also was undrafted and played in the Coast as did the Rangers Cam Talbot, out of the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Another thing they have in common: among NHL goalies with at least 12 starts, they are one-two-three in save percentage. Dave Hodge, TSN: My thumb is down to the likelihood that the NFL playoffs will be expanded to include 14 teams, up by two from the current 12. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones delivers the argument for more playoff teams this way: "How exciting is it for fans of a .500 team to see that team in the playoffs with a chance to win the Super Bowl?" Well, heres whats more exciting - two teams like Denver and Seattle, with 13-3 records, showing off their season-long excellence at the Super Bowl. Jerry Jones needs to improve his team, not the League. But the guy in charge of the league, Roger Goodell, supports the idea of more playoff teams, thus more playoff games - get ready for wild-card "week". ' ' '

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns owner Jimmy Haslam understands the situation looks bad, even embarrassing. Oren Burks Super Bowl Jersey . He bungled his first NFL coaching hire and cant afford to make another mistake. Haslam vowed it will be different this time. It has to be. A day after firing Rob Chudzinski for failing to make the Browns better in just one season, Haslam explained his reasons on Monday for the shocking move when he was forced to answer some tough questions, including one from a fan who wondered if the "Three Stooges" were running his team. "We understand the importance of continuity," Haslam said. "But I think its really important to hear this: We also understand the importance of getting it right." The Browns dumped Chudzinski on Sunday night, just hours after a 20-7 loss in Pittsburgh and less than a year after he was brought in to turn around a team that cant seem to get out of its own way. Haslam and CEO Joe Banner cited an overall lack of progress in their decision to dismiss Chudzinski, who had the Browns at 4-5 before they lost their final seven games and finished 4-12 -- the clubs sixth straight season with at least 10 losses. Banner said the decision was finalized Saturday. "As unpopular and undesirable as it is to sit here and acknowledge we didnt get it right, the fact that were making a change makes a statement that were not going to accept not being successful," Banner said. Haslam knows there are skeptics wondering if this Browns regime has what it takes to transform a foundering franchise. Cleveland fans have spent years hearing broken promises and plans that go astray. Haslam, though, is committed to making good on his word to bring sustained success to the Browns. "There will be a lot of people who say we should have given this staff a second year, a second chance," Haslam said. "And in our estimation, it was best to go ahead and make the change and try to get it right so that we can move forward and candidly, and most importantly, give the fans here the kind of winner they deserve." Banner and Haslam have begun their search for Chudzinskis replacement. Banner said the team is still deciding whether to interview Browns defensive co-ordinator Ray Horton for the opening. Horton interviewed with the Browns last season before the job went to Chudzinski, a lifelong Browns fan who was caught off guard by his ouster. Banner said none of the other candidates interviewed last year will be considered again. That would appear to rule out Penn State coach Bill OBrien and San Diego offensive co-ordinator Ken Whisenhunt. New England offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels could be the frontrunner to be Clevelands seventh full-time coach since 1999 because of his relationship with Browns general manager Michael Lombardi. The team requested permission to interview McDaniels as well as Seattle defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn and Denver offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase. The Browns are also expected to interview Arizona defensive co-ordinator Todd Bowles, who previously worked as an assistant on Butch Davis staff in Cleveland. Haslam knows its imperative to stop the constant turnover. The Browns have changed coaches four times in six years. "We have to prove to you all well get the right guy," Haslam said. "Were confident we can do that. But until that individual comes in here and wins football games, talk is cheap. So actions speak loud." The Browns do have a more attractive situation to lure a prospective coach than they did a year ago. Cleveland had five Pro Bowl players this season, the team has two first-round picks in Mays draft and theres plenty of salary cap room to sign free agents. "This is the crucial off-season for the Cleveland Browns," Haslam said. "If we get that right, well have a lot of positive press conferences. We feel a lot of pressure to get this right for our players, our fans and the city of Cleveland." Chudzinski was told of his firing shortly after the team returned by bus from Pittsburgh. "I was shocked and disappointed to hear the news that I was fired," Chudzinski said in a statement released by the Browns. "I am a Cleveland Brown to the core, and always will be. ... While clearly I would have liked to see the long-term vision through to the end, I am very grateful to Jimmy Haslam and the Haslam family for letting me live my dream." Chudzinski has three years left on his contract worth a reported $10 million. He was emotional as he said goodbye to his players. "Its unfortunate," wide receiver Josh Gordon said. "I cant say whats fair, whats not fair. The NFL, its the business of the league. But I thought he would have more time than that. "I figured any coach in the NFL would get at least two years. I didnt even know that was possible." Custom Packers Super Bowl Jerseys . The Toronto Argonauts running back hurt his left ankle during the teams practice Friday afternoon at Rogers Centre. After the bullying report, McDonald released a statement through his agent Brett Tessler saying, "While Andrew cant speak for other players involved in the report, he personally has had no problem with the Miami Dolphins organization and has the highest opinion of (offensive line) coach (Jim) Turner both personally and professionally and feels terrible about the way their relationship has been portrayed in the report." McDonald talked briefly on Wednesday about his time in Miami. He said offensive tackle Jonathan Martin, the primary victim in the bullying scandal that involved Richie Incognito, "went through a lot and it kind of affected him a little differently. "Everybody goes through a little adjustment when they get into the league. I saw it as beating on the rookies and just kind of playing around and messing with them. But with some people it goes a little too far some times." McDonald declined to say if the bullying he encountered went too far. Jaire Alexander Super Bowl Jersey . 2015 Oscar nomination pending. MANCHESTER, England - Liverpool revived its faltering English Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion, while under-pressure Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was spared another demoralizing loss thanks to the latest brace from Papiss Cisse on Saturday. Detroit Red Wings Store . Jordan Henderson set up Liverpools opening goal by Adam Lallana, and grabbed the winner in the 61st minute with a shot from inside the area, lifting the anxiety around Anfield after the clubs run of three league games without victory. We needed to find a way to win today, said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, whose team has struggled to maintain the form of last season that swept it to a second-place finish. Liverpools problems are nothing compared to those of Newcastle, which remained winless this season after a 2-2 draw at Swansea. The pressure on Pardew would have been fierce with another defeat but he was helped out by two equalizers from Cisse, who also scored twice in a draw against Hull two weeks ago. Anybody who saw the game today will see the players gave everything, Pardew said. Theres a lot of pressure on us and its difficult to play. They only way to get through this is keep fighting. Sunderland beat Stoke 3-1, Hull defeated Crystal Palace 2-0, and Burnley scored through a 90th-minute free kick to draw 2-2 at Leicester in a match between two promoted clubs. Manchester City could put pressure on first-place Chelsea by beating Aston Villa in the late game. The memory of Liverpools surprise challenge for the league title last season is fading after an underwhelming start to this campaign, with its only previous victories coming in August. The performance against West Brom was unconvincing, too, with Daniel Sturridge still out injured and Mario Balotelli dropped to the bench. Crucial interventions from Henderson made the difference. The England midfielders clever flick played in Lallana, who converted his first goal for Liverpool to give the hosts the lead in the 45th. Saido Berahino equalized with a 56th-minute penalty he won from a challenge by Dejan Lovren that appeared to be made outside the area, but Henderson restored Liverpools lead with a goal that lifted the team into the top half of the standings. Its been frustrating, Rodgers said. We had to make changes in the summer to strengthen the squad and we missed a world-class striker (after Luis Suarezs departure to Barcelona). We will get better as we go on. Pardews unstable position has been one of the talking points of the first two months, and the draw at Swansea should keep him in situ over the upcoming international break. The sinking feeling for Newcastles disheartened fans returned when Wilfried Bony put Swansea ahead in the 17th but Cisse equalized by getting a touch on Gabriel Obertans cross to the near post. Gylfi Sigurdsson picked up another assist when he laid in Wayne Routledge for Swanseas second goal in the 51st, only for Cisse to rescue Newcastle with 15 minutes left. Its my job to try and lift the players and make sure theres fight in their belly, Pardew said. The confidence will get better and this will give us belief. Steven Fletcher scored twice to help Sunderland to its first win of the campaign, after Connor Wickham put the team ahead against Stoke, while second-half goals by Mohamed Diame and Nikica Jelavic gave Hull its first victory since the opening day of the season. Burnley broke its club record by going 10 hours 52 minutes without a goal before Michael Kightly equalized at Leicester to cancel out Jeffrey Schlupps opener. Riyad Mahrez restored the home sides lead but Ross Wallaces last-minute strike earned Burnley a point that lifted the team off the bottom of the table, where it is provisionally replaced by Queens Park Rangers. LOUIS -- When Braves second baseman Tyler Pastornicky backpedaled into shallow right field to catch the popup and Jason Heyward didnt arrive fast enough to take charge, Kolten Wong got the green light.NASHVILLE -- Predators captain Shea Weber says he feels lucky to be skating again a week after taking a puck to the face that left him unable to see much at all until the next morning. "Definitely very thankful and lucky that it wasnt worse," Weber said. "It could have been a lot worse and got a second chance here, and obviously hopefully it doesnt happen again." Weber took a puck off his face near his right eye Nov. 28 in a 3-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, dropped to the ice and then skated off straight to the locker room. He practiced Friday for the first time and also wore a visor to protect his eyes after an injury that had him worried because of the blood affecting his vision. "You cant see anything out of it and you wonder if its long term," Weber said. "I mean youre uncertain, so you just have to wait and listen to what the doctor says and the guys that ... have dealt with these things before you make any assessment. I mean its tough, but you dont want to jump to any conclusion." As a veteran, Weber has been among those players allowed to play without a visor. He has finished second twice in voting for the Norris Trophy given out to the NHLs best defenceman, and he won a gold medal with Canada in the 2010 Olympics. But he said he spent the first four or five days not allowed to leave the couch to allow his eye time to heal. He was able to see more the next day after the injury with his vision returning gradually. Now Weber is getting used to wearing a visor that he previously had worn only in tournaments like the Olympics. "Well see how it goes," Weber said about the visor. "I mean for right now definitely dont want to take any second chances and dont want to get hit again. So, hopefuully I can just get used to it and its not going to be an issue and I can wear it going forward. Fake Red Wings Jerseys. " The Predators made a serious investment in the defenceman they drafted 49th overall in 2003 in July 2012 when they matched a 14-year, $110 million offer sheet by Philadelphia. The 6-foot-4, 234-pound defenceman also is a two-time All Star. Nashville coach Barry Trotz predicted that wearing visors probably will be mandatory in the NHL in a couple years anywhere and pointed out Weber will need it in the 2014 Olympics, too. Trotz said he thinks Weber realizes hes gotten a second chance after an injury that could have been disastrous. "He was able to avoid that, and obviously with that hes taken the right precautions by putting on the shield and having a very productive career and livelihood for a long, long time," Trotz said. "Thats our goal with him and for him, and thats what he wants." Weber accompanied the Predators on their trip, and Trotz said the defenceman may play Saturday night against the Washington Capitals. The Predators certainly need their captain back. Goalie Pekka Rinne has been out since needing arthroscopic surgery Oct. 24 to clean out a bacterial infection in his Oct. 24, and the Predators hope to pick up his activity from his rehab Dec. 20. But no date has been set for his return. Weber defenceman has missed three games and was their leading goal scorer when he was hurt. With seven goals, hes tied with Erik Karlsson of Ottawa, Torey Krug of Boston and Michael Stone of Phoenix for most by defencemen. Nashville has lost three straight without him, and is 7-0 when Weber scores this season. "Obviously, a tough stretch here and not playing the way we should be," Weber said. ' ' '

TORONTO -- Harry Redknapp got a rude shock after taking over Queens Park Rangers in November 2012. Charley Brock . The team was in last place in the English Premier League, its roster filled with bloated contracts and egos. "The attitude stank. Attitude towards the game, attitude towards training," he wrote in his autobiography "Always Managing." "I cant remember a worse one -- and behaviour like that cannot be altered overnight." Redknapp, however, found one kindred spirit. "Within weeks I had worked out that my best player was Ryan Nelsen, a 35-year-old New Zealand international -- and he couldnt wait to get out," Redknapp wrote. "`Youve got no chance, he told me. Not a prayer. This is the worst dressing room Ive ever been in in my life. You havent got a hope with this lot. I dont know how you solve it." Today, Nelsen is in his second season as manager of Toronto FC. He recalls his season with QPR -- his finale as a player -- as a ringside seat on what happens when a dressing room goes wrong. "It was an amazing learning experience for me," he said in an interview this week. Redknapp, whose team was relegated at the end of the 2012-13 season, is on the verge of taking QPR back to the Premier League after one season in the Championship. QPR faces Derby Country on Saturday at Wembley in a promotion playoff worth up to 120 million pounds (C$220.5 million), mostly from broadcast rights, according to a 2013 report by the Sports Business Group at Deloitte. With reported debts of 177 million pounds (C$325 million), Queens Park Rangers could do with hitting the promotion jackpot despite the deep pockets of millionaire owner Tony Fernandes. Among the things Nelsen learned at QPR was the need to get recruitment right, to watch wages and that a good football team needs chemistry off the field as well as organization in it. "It was an environment that probably players were getting paid too much for potentially their mentality to win," he said of QPR. "Young guys probably on too much before they had earned it." There were also older players who might have lost their fire. And second-tier Championship players who had the character desire but perhaps not the talent needed. "Everybody tried their best to get the mixture right, but it just didnt jell," said Nelsen. "It was just wrong." The ill-fated QPR spending spree was funded by Fernandes, a British-Malaysian businessman whose net worth as of February was valued at US$650 million according to Forbes magazine. He took over in August 2011, almost a year before Nelsen came on board. The New Zealand international didnt expect to play much at QPR, thinking his job would be to help then-manager Mark Hughes and successor Redknapp off the pitch. He ended up playing 21 league matches, becoming captain and turning into a fan favourite before leaving in January 2103 to take over Toronto FC. Nelsen points no fingers today, saying the intentions of Hughes and Fernandes "were so right for the club to do really well." The rot had set in too much by the time Redknapp took over. "There had to be a clearout before you could get it back again," he said. There are more fashionable soccer teams in London but Loftus Road, QPRs home in Shepherds Bush, has seen its share of players with flair in Rodney Marsh, Stan Bowles and Gerry Francis in the 1960s and 70s. A blue-collar club, QPR won the League Cup in 1966-67 and was runner-up in 1985-86. It was also runner-up in the FA Cup in 1981-82 and was runner-up in the First Division, precursor to the Premier League, in 1975-76. Celebrity QPR fans included musicians Phil Collins, Pete Doherty and composer Michael Nyman. A no-nonsense defender at the end of his playing career, Nelsens work ethic appealed to the QPR fans tired of rental players on big salaries. "I think they just liked that I worked hard and tried to win games," said Nelsen. "People respected that." Nelsen loved the QPR supporters right back. "But it wasnt right off the field," he said of the team. "And that weighed heavily on me because I was kind of brought in to help that out." QPR was relegated several months after Nelsens departure to Canada. According to the Daily Mail, the clubs wage bill was higher than that of Spanish champion and Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid. Toronto benefited from the subsequent clearout, with Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar coming to MLS on a loan agreement. Loic Remy (Newcastle) and Adel Taarabt (AC Milan) were also sent out on loan. Cesar, whose attitude has earned nothing but praise from Toronto coaches and players, says QPR wants him back in August. The team will have to reload if it returns to the Premier League. Redknapp, a master wheeler and dealer, brought in hardened veterans of the Championship to help climb back up the mountain. "He invested really wisely," said Nelsen. "He moved guys that probably had big value. And in saying that, their value has probably increased." Nelsen will be watching closely this weekend. "Ive got a lot of friends on that QPR team," he said. In addition to the big-time Charlies, he remembers of group of honest players desperate to succeed. "And QPR had them. They probably got outnumbered bit a little at the end but those guys, you wish them the best so badly. and for Harry as well, because at his age (now 67) he probably could have gone off and retired somewhere. But he knuckled down in the Championship and you wish them all the success. "All of his coaching staff were fantastic when I was there. And theyve helped me since Ive been here, to tell you the truth." Oscar McBride . The second-ranked Serb won 11 consecutive games and improved to 6-0 against Montanes, who has taken only one set off Djokovic. "For the first match on clay, it was great. There were not too many flaws in my game," Djokovic said. "I was just trying to use the court well, not allowing him to get into the rhythm. I was changing the angles, coming to the net, being aggressive." The speed and ease of the win reminded him of when he beat Czech player Jan Hernych 6-0, 6-0 five years ago in the second round at Basel, Switzerland. "Its great that you have a chance to finish your work on the court in such a short time," he said. "On the other (hand), I would like to have a little bit more longer rallies, bigger challenge so I can test myself, see where I am, where my game is at this moment on clay." The only small drawback for Djokovic is that he has some soreness in his right wrist. "I have a certain problem that I carry for the last week or so," he said. "The short match today helped definitely. So Im going to have some time to heal it." Djokovic has won two Masters titlles this year, beating Rafael Nadal in Key Biscayne and Roger Federer at Indian Wells. Mike Fink. He is also looking for his fifth straight Masters title after winning Paris and Shanghai at the end of last year. He faces Frenchman Gael Monfils in the next round, who beat 14th-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-4, 7-6 (4), or Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta. French Open runner-up David Ferrer of Spain needed a bit longer to reach the third round, taking just over one hour to beat Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-0 after dropping his opening service game. Ferrer, who lost the final here to Nadal in 2011, next plays 12th-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria or Albert Ramos of Spain. Ninth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France also advanced to round three after beating Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. In the first round, Dimitrov beat Marcel Granollers of Spain 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, while 13th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia lost to Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-3, 7-6 (4) and No. 16 Jerzy Janowicz of Poland was beaten by Michael Llodra of France 6-4, 6-2. Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia beat Gilles Simon of France 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 and will next play Nadal on Wednesday, while Croat Marin Cilic beat Australian Marinko Matosevic 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 and faces Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, the third seed. Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork. Don Chandler Jersey .com) - Illinois State finally gets to play the No. 1 team in the country ... and its not North Dakota State. The Redbirds had been working to come out of the shadow of North Dakota State, the three-time defending FCS national champion, after they didnt face each other in the regular season while both earned a share of the Missouri Valley Football Conference title. New Hampshire replaced NDSU as the No. 1-ranked team late in the regular season and then earned the top seed for the 24-team national playoffs. With the field dwindled to four, Illinois State, the fifth seed, will take on the Wildcats in a semifinal Saturday, with the winner advancing to the FCS championship game on Jan. 10 in Frisco, Texas. Despite playing on the road, Illinois State (12-1) might even be considered the favorite against CAA Football champion New Hampshire (12-1) as the programs meet for the first time. The Redbirds are big, strong and fast, and are coming off a highly impressive, 59-46 win at Eastern Washington in the quarterfinals. Some of the matchups werent good for us. They were even better in person, Eastern Washington coach Beau Baldwin said. In the other semifinal Friday night, second-seeded North Dakota State (13-1) will try to become the third program to reach the FCS championship game in four straight seasons, joining Eastern Kentucky (1979-82) and Youngstown State (1991-94). The Bison will host a familiar foe in unseeded Sam Houston State (11-4), whom they defeated in both the 2011 and 12 national championship games. FCS PREDICTIONS Last Weeks Record: 2-2 (.500) This Seasons Record: 642-193 (.769) X-Predicted Winner FCS Playoff Semifinals All Times ET Friday, Dec. 19 Sam Houston State (11-4) at No. 2 seed North Dakota State (13-1) Kickoff: 8 p.m. (ESPN2) What to Know: The national championship finalists from 2011 and 12 are set to square off again, and a lot has changed since North Dakota State dominated with defense in both victories. As far as personnel, Sam Houston is especially different. Both teams even have new coaches, Sam Houstons K.C. Keeler, who won the 2003 national title at Delaware, and North Dakota States Chris Klieman, an assistant during the Bisons three straight titles. The Bearkats have won three playoff games over an impressive list of opponents (Southeastern Louisiana, Jacksonville State and Villanova), but this is the Southland Conference powers third straight game on the road and North Dakota State is a stronger team than the earlier opponents. The Bearkats rely a lot on their team speed, but the host Bison also have the speed defensively to match the visitors athleticism. Sam Houstons run game averages 250.7 yards per game and recently injured rushing leader Keshawn Hill looked more like himself in last Saturdays quarterfinal-round win at Villanova, which makes dual-threat quarterback Jared Johnson even more dangerous. But Johnson is going to need another big passing game (22-for-27, 303 yards, three touchdowns against Villanova) to keep the Bison from loading up the box with eight defenders. Freshman defensive end P.J. Hall had two more sacks against Villanova, giving him 11 this season as well as 29 tackles for loss. He figures to be disruptive because North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz likes to move from the pocket and he wont want to go Halls way. Sam Houston safety Michael Wade is one of the few veteran holdovers from the championship game appearances against North Dakota State. His savvy play will set the tone on the back end. Plus, the Bison have gotten younger at wide receiver since standout senior Zach Vraa was injured two weeks ago. The Bearkats have given up too many rushing yards in the playoffs, so North Dakota States primary objective is to put the ball in the hands of senior running back John Crockett. who smoked Coastal Carolina last Saturday for 227 yards and two touchdowns when the reigning champs were facing the end of a playoff winning streak that now is at 14. Wentz often softens a defense with draws and rollouts, then Crockett (1,754 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground) can break off decisive games. Still, the bread and butter of Bison football remains the defense, even though the vaunted unit is still seeking a dominating effort in this postseason. Perhaps it reflects how much they miss veteran linebacker Travis Beck, their fiery leader, who was injured in the regular-season finale. Defensive end Kyle Emanuel, the 2014 Buck Buchanan Award winner, will lead the swarming defense. If the Bison can make the game a bruising affair, the Bearkats might struggle for offensive rhythm. Plus, the Bison defense energizes the Fargodome crowd, and that cant be minimized when a visiting team hasnt experienced it before. The Bison have won 22 straight home games. This game also matches excellent special teams. Being indoors is always good for North Dakota State kicker Adam Keller, who is 26-for-31 on field goal attempts this season. Luc Swimberghe (17-for-19) is reliable for Sam Houston. The punters - Lachlan Edwards (Sam Houston) and Ben LeCompte (NDSU) - are among the best in the nation. Prediction: North Dakota State has two scares in the playoffs already. The Bison are usually good at making statements when there is talk of a loss. North Dakota State, 37-23. Saturday, Dec. 20 No. 5 seed Illinois State at No. 1 seed New Hampshire (12-1) Kickoff: 2 p.m. (ESPNU) What to Know: Both teams have one previous national semifinal appearance (Illinois State in 1999 and New Hampshire last year). Whoever wins this first- ever meeting will advance to the national championship game for the first time. Illinois States gifted offense was relentless in dispatching Eastern Washington, 59-46, in the quarterfinals. But now the Redbirds are moving to the other side of the country, so its possible all the travel will have an effect on the Missouri Valley Football Conference co-champions. Still, star running back Marshaun Coprich doesnt appear to be slowing down, having gone over 100 rushing yards in all 13 games. That includes 258 yards and four touchdowns against Eastern Washington, which gave him a national-high 2,089 yards this season. With New Hampshire playing a 4-2-5 defensive alignment, he should be able to get to the edge of the secondary, as he likes to do. Of course, Illinois State has had a 1-2 offensive punch all season. Quarterback Tre Roberson, the Indiana transfer, has set the school record for total yards in a season (3,559) and accounted for 36 total touchdowns. He often gets long gains out of his receiving corps after defenses put their focus on Coprich. Illinois State also is big and physical on the offensive line, led by Jermaine Barton, and that gives the Redbirds the chance to match what has been a productive New Hampshire defensive front during the playoffs. Big defensive end Teddy Corbin is the one opponents must build a game plan against. He is one of the Redbirds two All-Missouri Valley first-team defensive selections with linebacker Pat Meehan, their leading tackler. New Hampshire is only 1-4 all-time in the postseason against Missouri Valley teams. The Wildcats have to be error-free on offense, especially quarterback Sean Goldrich, who will mix in the run and pass. Coach Sean McDonnell, the Eddie Robinson Award winner, figures to be creative offensively, and the Wildcats want to let their top playmaker. wide receiver R.J. Harris, work his magic. He is tied atop UNHs all-time receptions list (304, with David Ball) and is six receptions shy of 100 and 17 yards under 1,500 this season. Running back Nico Steriti doesnt break long runs, but hes built strong and powers through defenses to eat up yards. Had he not been hurt during the regular season, he figured to have been at an All-CAA level. The playoffs are giving the senior a chance to make up for lost time. The UNH defense can bend but cant break like Eastern Washingtons did against Illinois State. Chattanooga had 566 yards against UNH in the quarterfinals, so the Wildcats were fortunate to pull out a 35-30 win. Defensive tackle Matt Kaplan makes the Wildcats balanced defense go when he is breaking through the middle with pressure in the backfield. Safety Casey DeAndre is always around the ball on the back end. The Wildcats, in the playoffs for an 11th straight season (no other program is beyond five) have won 13 straight games at Cowell Stadium, including an 8-0 mark this season. Prediction: New Hampshire doesnt often play teams with a better offense. This is one of those times, though. Illinois State, 38-28. Allen Lazard Jersey .
