It’s open on Saturday to prospective season ticket-holders, and on Wednesday afternoon, Marlins and Nationals prospects brought their instructional league matchup down to Miami. Both rosters are stacked with future big leaguers, many of whom saw action during the 1:10 p.m. game.Representing Fish Stripes, Ian Smith was in the building through it all (the event was not open to the public). Why did the Marlins set this up in the first place? Let Gary Denbo, VP of player development and scouting, explain:Early-round draft picks ConnorScott (foot) and WillBanfield (toe) were kept out of the starting lineup as a precaution, according to Andre Fernandez of The Athletic. Home games will be at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter (open to the public):Marlins 2018 Instructional League ScheduleDateTimeOpponentDateTimeOpponentMarlins Communications Reflecting on the Orioles’ history with starters and their pitching coaches shows it’s difficult to predict what to expect from new pitching coach Doug Brocail."The Orioles have had some good offenses in the past twenty-some years. Looking all the way back to the wire-to-wire 1997 season, it’s the pitching that has really been the team’s Achilles heel since the success of the late ‘90s teams.Going back further to 1971 provides the shining example of a stellar Orioles pitching staff. That was the year that four starters — Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar and Pat Dobson — all won at least 20 games. The Orioles’ greatest homegrown pitcher since then and up to now is Mike Mussina. He pitched the first 10 years of his career in Baltimore — with a record of 147-81, a 3.53 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP — before departing for the New York Yankees to pitch the final eight years of his career.Mussina’s pitching coach during that 1997 season was Ray Miller, who also held the same job title with the O’s again from 2004-2005. Work fast http://www.raysfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey , keep the ball down and change speeds — that was Miller’s mantra. In 1997, the Orioles had a 3.91 team ERA, good for second best in the American League. In Miller’s second stint as pitching coach beginning in 2004, the Orioles team ERA was 4.70, which was seventh best in the American League. In 2005, that number was 4.56, good for tenth place in the AL. In his final year as pitching coach, 2005, the rotation was comprised of Rodrigo Lopez, Sidney Ponson, Bruce Chen, Erik Bedard and Daniel Cabrera. Remember Cabrera? He had the height, downward plane and pure stuff that was supposed to lead to stardom. But no Orioles pitching coach was ever able to harness that potential. Sadly, Cabrera walked nearly as many people as he struck out over the course of his career, averaging 6.8 SO/9 and 5.2 BB/9.Left-hander Erik Bedard had a 4.29 ERA in two years working under Miller. But his real breakout came in 2007 while Leo Mazzone was the pitching coach. Bedard went 13-5 that year with a 3.16 ERA and 221 strikeouts in 182 innings. One might assume that was the beginning to a long and illustrious career as a starter for the O’s Jonny Venters Jersey , but after being the centerpiece in the Adam Jones trade in the 2007-2008 offseason, Bedard pitched for five teams over the next six years, compiling a 4.15 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in that time span.Mazzone, the pitching coach for Bedard’s breakout year, only lasted two years total in Baltimore. In 2006, Mazzone’s first year, the team’s 5.35 ERA put them second to last in the American League in that category. The following year, the team had a 5.17 ERA that was again ranked second to last in the AL.Can we give some of the credit for Bedard’s success to Mazzone? Maybe. But there’s also too many other variables involved to undoubtedly point to the pitching coach as the main reason for success. Plus, look at the performance of the pitching staff as a whole for the two years Mazzone was in town. If he gets all the credit for Bedard’s success then he should get all the credit for the pitching unit’s failures.Which brings us to the new Orioles pitching coach (reportedly). Doug Brocail. He was the Houston Astros pitching coach from 2011-2013 and held the same role with the Texas Rangers from 2016-2018.In 2012, his first full season as Astros’ pitching coach, the club had a 4.56 ERA, which was second to last in the NL. The following year the Astros were last in ERA in the AL at 4.79.In 2016 with the Rangers, Brocail’s pitching staff had the second worst ERA in the AL at 4.37. The Rangers were 11th out of 15 AL teams in 2017 with a 4.66 ERA and they were 13th out of 15 at 4.92 in 2018.But don’t rush to judgement too quickly. Patience is required during a rebuild like this one. New GM Mike Elias and his entire staff made it clear publicly that they will put the supports and structure in place to allow Brocail the chance to achieve at least a modicum of success in his new role with the O’s.Maybe Brocail can connect with Dylan Bundy and help him take his game to the next level. Or maybe he can help Andrew Cashner and Alex Cobb find more consistency, or mold someone we’ve never heard of into an above-average major leaguer. The O’s will need at least a few of those things to go right in order to speed up the rebuild.

If not http://www.dodgersfanproshop.com/authentic-max-muncy-jersey , he won’t be able to step up to a more important role."Obviously, Workman has been around for quite some time now. We all remember when he burst onto the scene in 2013 and was something of a key figure in that team’s World Series run. Expectations were high for him, but after an up-and-down 2014 he went down with an injury the following year that eventually resulted in Tommy John surgery. The righty has been a full-time reliever since that point, and he’s spent the last two seasons jumping between Pawtucket and Boston. That, of course, can’t happen in 2019 as he is out of minor-league options.Since returning to the majors, Workman has been an interesting pitcher whose reputation really relies on how one judges a starting pitcher. By pure results, he’s been really good and it’s hard to argue against him being the number three in this bullpen. In two partial seasons, he’s pitched to ERAs of 3.18 and 3.27. That’s good! And consistent! He’s also been consistent by FIP, though on the other end of the spectrum. His FIPs the last two years have been 4.47 and 4.45. By DRA, though, it’s been a tale of two entirely different years. In 2017, he was well above-average with a 3.68 DRA but in 2018 he was well below-average with a 6.21 DRA. The big different between the two years was in the control department. Two years ago he walked 2.5 batters per nine innings and 6.8 percent of his opponents compared to 3.5 per nine and 9.6 percent in 2018. Looking more broadly, the biggest issue for Workman through his entire career has been a lack of deception. He’s missed some bats at times, but he’s given up a ton of home runs (he’s never allowed fewer than 1.1 homers per nine innings) and has had issues with control in every year but 2017.Roster Projection 2.0Kim Klement-USA TODAY SportsLooking specifically at last season, you can see a clear lack of deception from his plate discipline numbers. By Baseball Prospectus’ numbers, Workman induced swings on just 25.6 percent of pitches out of the strike zone. To put that into context, 432 pitchers threw at least 600 pitches in 2018 and only 38 got swings at a lower rate on those pitches out of the zone. That puts Workman in the bottom ten percent of the league. To be fair to him, he had good success on those swings as his swinging strike rate there was in the top three percent of the league. If he wants to reach another level in the bullpen, though, and become a third late-inning arm this team desperately needs Sandy Koufax Jersey , he’s going to need to benefit more from that swinging strike rate. And if he’s going to do that, he needs to get batters to swing at more bad pitches, which again comes down to deception. It’s really not a mystery how this would help a pitcher, and just some improvement in this area could be a massive boost for Workman. Getting more swings out of the zone would lead to more strikes (even if he takes a step back from 2018 in terms of contact rate on pitches out of the zone, which is likely), which would obviously in turn lead to more strikeouts and fewer walks. Workman has struck out fewer than a batter per inning in each of the last two years, and it’s hard to be an effective reliever in today’s game like that. Perhaps most importantly, more swings on pitches out of the zone could be a big help in the home run department. Contact on those pitches are obviously worse, and even without contact it would help lead to Workman getting ahead in counts. More advantageous counts will then lead to more defensive hitters. If he can allow even a couple fewer homers per year, it would make a huge difference.Photo by Elsa/Getty ImagesThe issue here is that Workman made the adjustments last year that would ostensibly help lead to the changes we are talking about here. Specifically, he started throwing a lot fewer fastballs in 2018 and leaned more heavily on his curveball. Prior to last season, he had thrown his fastball at least half the time in every season, but that rate dropped below 40 percent in 2018. Conversely, his curveball rate was less than 25 percent in every season but in 2018 it jumped up to 37 percent. The problem was two-fold. For one thing, hitters not chasing his curveball enough, particularly on pitches below the zone. The other problem was with his third pitch, the cutter, which found itself with similar issues. As far as what needs to happen in 2019, Workman really has two paths he can take. The first is to just pound the strike zone more and hope that the improvement in walks will outweigh any increase in hard contact. The other is to work more on honing his secondaries and mixing his pitches more to get more swings out of the zone. In my estimation, his pure stuff isn’t good enough to make the first strategy works. To me, if Workman is going to take a step forward in his age-30 season http://www.dodgersfanproshop.com/authentic-max-muncy-jersey , it’s going to be because he’s fooling more batters and moving closer to league-average in terms of swings out of the strike zone. I wouldn’t necessarily bet on it happening, but the Red Sox need someone to make a key adjustment in the bullpen, and Workman’s as good a bet as anyone. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Before slipping into the baby costume that was part of rookie dress-up travel day for the late-surging Tampa Bay Rays, Ryan Yarbrough broke a record that had stood since the team’s first season 20 years ago.And Tommy Pham homered twice for the still playoff-hopeful Rays in another win for another sweep.A day after Blake Snell became the majors’ first 20-game winner in two years, the Rays used an “opener” for the 49th time this season. Yarbrough, the second of five pitchers, struck out six in four innings for his 15th victory as Tampa Bay completed a three-game sweep with a 9-3 win at Texas on Wednesday.“There’s a lot that he’s doing right, that’s pretty awesome,” manager Kevin Cash said of Yarbrough (15-5), who has started only six of his 36 games and broke the Rays rookie record for wins that had stood since their inaugural season in 1998.“He’s earned those. You’ve got to come in and you’ve got to pitch well to get a ‘W’ more times than not, and he’s done that,” Cash said. “Whether he’s started games or coming in after an opener, he’s really taking advantage of that role that we’ve asked him to pitch in.”The Rays (85-66), who have won 14 of their 17 games in September and have 11 remaining, stayed 5 1/2 games behind Oakland for the American League’s second wild card despite a record that would lead or share the lead in three divisions in baseball. But they are third in the AL East behind the 103-win Boston Red Sox and 93-win New York Yankees.“It’s really easy to look too much at the bigger picture,” said Matt Duffy, who had a two-run double. “In order to take care of win after win, and game after game, you have to focus on what’s right in front of you.”Tampa Bay’s record was the same as AL Central champion Cleveland, and better than that of NL East leader Atlanta and the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.Jake Bauers had a two-run double and scored on Willy Adames‘ single in the second off lefty Yohander Mendez (2-2) to put the Rays ahead to stay at 3-0. Pham hit his 18th homer leading off the third Hyun-Jin Ryu Jersey , and Duffy’s double in the fourth made it 8-1.Pham went deep again in the eighth for his seventh career multihomer game, off 45-year-old Bartolo Colon, who was pitching in relief. It was Colon’s first appearance since his last start on Sept. 5.“I play this game to win, and I play it to have success,” said Pham, whose career-best 21-game on-base streak is the longest active in the AL. “That’s what’s been going on here. When you have that combination in the locker room, it’s always going to be good.”BELTRE MOVING UPAdrian Beltre hit his 13th homer of the season for the Rangers. It was the 475th of his career, matching Stan Musial and Willie Stargell for 30th on the all-time list.“I should be proud of that, and I am proud of that,” Beltre said. “Any time that you make a list with those guys’ names, you have accomplished something.”Beltre’s 1,698 RBIs are one shy of Jim Thome for 23rd. Beltre also had a double and is 15th with his 3,159 career hits, 25 behind Cal Ripken Jr.STREAKS AND SWEEPSThe Rays clinched their fourth sweep in nine series since Aug. 20, and their 12th series sweep of the season matched a club record. Tampa Bay has also won five consecutive games, the seventh time this season it won at least that many games in a row.FINALLY SCOREDTampa Bay posted shutout victories in the first two games of the series. The Rangers ended a season-long scoreless drought of 23 innings in the third when Carlos Tocci singled and scored on Elvis Andrus‘ two-out single.TRAINER’S ROOMRays: C Jesus Sucre started but didn’t finish the game. He has a sore left foot after fouling a ball off it Tuesday. “We’ll probably rest him for a day or two and see how he responds,” Cash said.Rangers: Relievers Matt Bush (partial tear of UCL in right elbow) and Austin Bibens-Dirkx (torn cartilage right knee) had surgery Wednesday. Busch will miss the first half of the 2019 season. PORT ST. LUCIE Michael Brantley Jersey , Fla. (AP) — The New York Mets hope their hard-throwing pitchers can dominate in the NL East this season.First, they have a little work to do controlling the strike zone.Noah Syndergaard walked five over 2 2/3 innings and Edwin Diaz gave out two free passes in his spring debut Saturday, shaky efforts for two of the biggest arms in the sport.Syndergaard opened by walking Houston’s George Springer on four pitches and was charged with an unearned run when Springer scored on a throwing error by shortstop Danny Espinosa.“Probably not his best outing ever,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “But when it’s something not typical of a player like that, kind of scattering the ball around, you don’t really worry about it.“It’s kind of an anomaly in my mind. The stuff was good, the sliders he clicked were really good, he threw some good change-ups and we know the velocity is there and he was feeling good. He just didn’t have command of the ball like he usually does.”Syndegaard averaged 97.4 mph on his fastball last season, second best in the majors among pitchers with at least 100 innings behind the Yankees’ Luis Severino. He said the timing of his delivery was off Saturday.“My lower half and my upper half weren’t really quite synching up,” he said. “I just tried to guide the ball instead of drive it through the mitt.”This was Syndergaard’s second outing of the spring, and he pitched well in the first one. He said he wasn’t totally comfortable for the debut http://www.indiansfanproshop.com/authentic-b.j.-upton-jersey , either, but thinks it might be beneficial to have to grind through some innings in early March.“I always think it’s great to struggle, that separates the men from the boys. It’s how you react and make adjustments … when you realize you don’t have your best stuff,” said Syndergaard, who held the Astros hitless.Diaz posted an MLB-high 57 saves last season for the Mariners and ranked 13th among qualified relievers with a 97.3 mph average fastball. The Mets were anxious to watch their new closer make his blue-and-orange debut. Diaz walked a pair in a scoreless sixth inning, fanned one and didn’t allow a hit to the Astros in an 8-7 loss.“He was a little rusty because he hasn’t pitched in a game until today for a while,” Callaway said. “He’ll get it all honed in and over the plate and be aggressive. His stuff is great.”NOTES: OF Michael Conforto hit a solo homer off Justin Verlander in the first inning, his first shot of the spring. … Catcher Wilson Ramos hit a grand slam and went 3 for 3. … Callaway said Travis D’Arnaud will serve as the DH on Sunday and Monday. It will be his first action since Tommy John surgery in April. … INF Jed Lowrie held a clinic with a Colombian baseball team Saturday on Field 2. One of the players was Jose Mosquera, who lost his right leg in a car accident. A big supporter of Project Beisbol, Lowrie and wife Milessa covered the cost of a prosthetic leg and fitting procedure for Mosquera. “It speaks volumes of what the game means to so many,” said Lowrie of Mosquera’s commitment to baseball. The interactions with him are generally a good thing. That’s not always the case with managers.” The ways in which the Rockies players speak of Black — Kyle Freeland comes to mind — suggest that Black’s approach is working. While Rockies Twitter likes to make fun of “being a good clubhouse guy,” there’s a lot to be said for a positive workspace. Black makes that happen.Bud Black sees himself a teacher:ChallengesThat brings us to the Rockies’ offense. Perhaps telling hitters what a pitcher is thinking, while valuable, isn’t enough. The Rockies have struggled for the last two years, ranking 28th in the majors as measured by wRC+; according to OPS+, the Rockies were 25th. It’s difficult to determine whether offensive decisions are made by Black or General Manager Jeff Bridich given their highly collaborative relationship. As Nick Groke points out in this article, part of Black’s managerial role is to be “[folded] into their front office as much as the dugout.” This suggests that it was Black’s decision to give Ian Desmond 619 plate appearances in 2018. Whatever the reason for all that playing time, Black stood by Desmond through a dismal year — and, frankly http://www.indiansfanproshop.com/authentic-b.j.-upton-jersey , a manager should. But it doesn’t answer the larger question about Black’s effectiveness as an offensive manager.Black has been criticized for a resistance to playing less-experienced players. Purple Row’s Samantha Bradfield asked Bridich about this. He answered, “Just because you’re young and you’re talented, there’s always certain things that need to be done, whether it’s a position player or a pitcher in order to make sure that you show everybody that you’re ready to take on the responsibility of not just playing at the major league level, but winning games at the major league level and contributing to that group effort.” The extent to which Black shares his thinking is unclear.Coaching staff changesTony Diaz left while Duane Espy was replaced as hitting coach. Meanwhile, a similar contest will be happening in the outfield. The Rockies will, indeed, let the kids play http://www.indiansfanproshop.com/authentic-b.j.-upton-jersey , which will provide additional insight into Black’s ability to work with young players. In terms of the coaching staff, Dave Magadan is probably the most consequential change, and given the number of young players trying to make the roster, he will have a chance to make an impact. (Read Nick Groke’s profile here.) Keeping Steve Foster and Darren Holmes in place suggests a positive future for Rockies pitching, assuming everyone stays healthy.2019 will mark a year of possibilities for the Colorado Rockies. Now we see what happens when they let the kids play, which will provide a new measure of Black’s managerial skills.

Not that it’s a bad thing, but the added presence of the former All-Star has created a bit of a surplus behind the plate that the team will now have to figure out what to do with during Spring Training. Barring an unforeseen injury, as things stand right now David Stearns and company will have to decide whether to stick with Manny Pina or Erik Kratz as Grandal’s backup heading into the 2019 regular season. There is a chance that that the club could make a subtraction before things get to that point, however.According to Adam McCalvy’s most recent mailbag post as Brewers.com, one of Milwaukee’s excess backstops has begun to draw some trade interest:McCalvy’s comments don’t seem to indicate that any kind of deal is close or even particularly likely, but it certainly isn’t surprising that the team is getting calls on Manny Pina when considering the dearth of quality catching around the game. The 31 year old’s bat wasn’t quite as potent during his second full MLB season as it was the year before Kerry Wood Jersey , but Pina’s .252/.307/.395 slash in 2018 (85 wRC+, 90 DRC+) was still above-average when it comes to his peers at the position of catcher. He popped nine homers among his 24 extra base hits in 337 plate appearances, and he also graded out as one of the better defenders to don the tools of ignorance. Long lauded for his outstanding throwing arm, Pina caught 41% of would-be base thieves in 2018 while also accruing +4.8 framing runs (per Baseball Prospectus). In terms of overall defensive contributions, Pina was credited with +6 Defensive Runs Saved and +7.0 Fielding Runs Above Average last season. It’s no wonder why Pina’s usable bat and quality work with the pitching staff would make him a desirable commodity, and the newfound financial certainty surrounding his future is just another reason why other teams might be interested. He just inked an eminently reasonable http://www.chicagocubsteamshop.com/authentic-david-ross-jersey , fully-guaranteed $1.6 mil deal for 2019 that includes a $1.85 mil option for 2020 with a $150K buyout, a level of cash that any team could comfortably fit into their budget whether they’re counting on Pina as their regular catcher or as a backup. But, those traits also make Manny Pina someone that might be tough for Milwaukee to part with unless Slingin’ Stearns is presented with a deal that he simply cannot refuse. This is surely a situation worth monitoring in the coming days and weeks leading up to Opening Day. For what it’s worth, Erik Kratz’s non-guaranteed contract would pay him only $300K (roughly the equivalent of 45 days worth of termination pay) if he is released before the start of the regular season.Statistics courtesy of Fangraphs and Baseball Prospectus

Since debuting in 2017, the southpaw appeared in 13 games for the Fish, 11 of them starts, going 3-4 with a 6.10 ERA.Since the Angels took Stevens in the 18th round of the 2017 draft http://www.athleticsfanproshop.com/authentic-khris-davis-jersey , he rapidly ascended from rookie ball to AAA Salt Lake, where he struggled mightily, turning in a 10.93 ERA in 28 innings. One look at his peripherals, though, and the potential is evident. The 22-year-old had a 4.67 xFIP and a 4.04 FIP, striking out almost 12 batters per nine innings (11.57 K/9). In other words, Stevens was extremely unlucky—a .551 BABIP and 56.4 left-on-base percentage had a lot to do with the poor run prevention. He will be thankful to escape the hitter-friendly environment at high-altitude Salt Lake Jake Smolinski Jersey , too. No matter what Stevens’ stats are or were, getting anything in a trade at all for a DFA’d player is a minor miracle. Miami would’ve had to release Peters with nothing in return for him had they not made a deal. It ought to be a welcome change of scenery for Peters. At least for 2019, the Angels present a clearer path to the big leagues than the Marlins could. They have several significant rotation candidates trying to recuperate from elbow issues, so he could take advantage of any setbacks.

The Braves had Thursday off Russell Martin Jersey , but will resume action on Friday against the Phillies."BRAVES NEWSUpdated projection of Braves’ 25-man rosterBraves beat writer Mark Bowman gave an updated 25-man roster projection on Thursday, with a notable, if temporary, inclusion making the cut:Stupid off day math: probabilistic division standingsIvan looks at the probability of the Braves winning the NL East in 2019, and the results are not wildly encouraging, but as he notes, they have a better outlook than any season from 2015-2018.Braves prospect Weigel’s story is one that shouldn’t be overlookedThis story is behind a paywall on The Athletic, but is certainly one worth reading. Patrick Weigel was a top prospect as recently as 2017, and after undergoing Tommy John surgery, is now ready to resume his march to the big leagues. Read more about how the right-hander will attempt to make his mark in Atlanta in the near future, which would be quite the pleasant surprise for all those who fell in love with Weigel’s immense potential during his initial ascent through the organization.BRAVES PODCASTSTalking Chop Podcast Episode 154: Bullpen preview, Bryce Harper and moreBrad and Scott look into current events in Braves camp, such as the state of the bullpen, injury concerns, Opening Day rosters, and more. MLB NEWSShould Dodgers splurge on Kimbrel? This feels like something that could upset Braves fans...Here’s why Dallas Keuchel is a unicornAnd here’s why he is not: No horn, no magic powers, and only moderately resembles a horse. Not even close buddy. But he is a solid starter and would be a welcome addition to the Braves rotation if the price is right. What types of players should the Cubs look to draft in June?"The MLB Draft is in early June. Along with the international J-2 (for July 2 Josh Donaldson Jersey , when new international players become available) cycle, those are the most cost-effective ways of adding low-cost talent long-term. The disturbing trend (It’s disturbing for many people, at least) of players signing away free agency seasons for safe long-term contracts makes both cycles more important. That doesn’t make the selection process easy or guaranteed. A team is best-served being “top half” than “bottom half” in both processes. Do the current seasons (MLB and MiLB) play a part in preferences? As a baseball fan, you don’t have to like that owners have some of their best talent in a bit of a stranglehold to realize what’s happening. Part of why it’s happening may be the (orchestrated?) spiking of interest in recent high-end free agents. If you realize what’s happening, you can hope that your team can add a few more reasonably cost-friendly additions to the long-term talent stable. You don’t have to feel good about it. You could also hope for “more realistic deals” or “free agency compensation” for top-shelf talent. Whichever way, adding quality talent in June or July is the best way to position a team for long-term beneficial talent at low costs.I’ve never been invited to a baseball team’s “war room,” but I’d imagine a draft preference list is a rather evolving beast. The guy who looks like an obvious choice in February might have injury concerns in March, or a cold stretch in April or May. The team wants to add high-quality people, but they want them to play well, also. Tie in individual needs, and 200-plus teams being scouted, and a team’s preference list looks a bit like an elaborate spiderweb or tapestry. The information that matters most is the information leading to draft day. What happens after (likely) couldn’t have been accounted for, anyway.Since getting one player essentially rules out getting any of a dozen other similarly valued talents, desire still matters. As much as “best player available” is desired, ties and virtual ties have to be broken. To that extent, knowledge of what is already available is a reasonably important consideration. In 2016 and 2017, the system-wide pitching was a major concern. Last June’s selections were more balanced.Occasionally, prospect types are pushed a bit into people saying “call him up” regarding players doing well http://www.bluejaysfanproshop.com/authentic-curtis-granderson-jersey , but clearly not yet MLB-ready. A bit similarly, I run into the occasional “draft an ACE,” which falls a bit into the same bin. Ron Guidry was one of the fascinating pitchers in the late 1970s into the mid 1980s. He was a third-round choice. Do you know why nobody selected that “ace” early? Because nobody could have known he was going to be an ace from his pitching at Louisiana/Lafayette. He was respected, though, or he wouldn’t have gone so early. You might want a starting pitcher in the first round. Perhaps a thumping outfielder is more your speed. Maybe you prefer “middle infielder.” Scouts have hunches on how well players will do, but players that slip to the 27th spot in the first round will often have questions, on or off field. Based on what you know of the Cubs system, what draft trends are you most interested in seeing in 2019? More hitters than pitchers in the first six picks? How would you even assess what should be desired?Players chosen and signed are put into the development pipeline. Your preference for what the Cubs prioritize might sway a bit with how the pipeline is developing so far this season. The Triple-A Iowa Cubs and the Double-A Tennessee Smokies are pitching particularly well this season. That doesn’t rule out taking a particularly intriguing pitcher, but it limits the need to overload on that aspect of player development. The first six rounds probably provide the best chance for a breakout talent. The way the draft works, the next two most likely players to have top-side payout are choices in the 11th and 12th rounds. As often as not, rounds seven through ten are about saving money for other selections. Assessing the top of a draft can as likely be argued as “the top four,” “the top six,” or the aforementioned eight choices. Since the Cubs have the fifth-smallest draft bonus pool, don’t expect many prep selections to sign.South Bend (Low-A) is hitting for average, but not power. (South Bend is currently second of 16 Midwest League teams in batting average, 12th in on-base percentage, and bottom quarter in slugging and OPS.) Myrtle Beach (Advanced-A) is hardly hitting at all. (They have a .518 OPS as a team as of Sunday morning.) Whether top-four, six J.A. Happ Jersey , or eight, I’m still interested in a mild preference of bats over arms in June. Inside the arms discussion, I’d be totally keen with adding a top reliever from the college ranks between the fourth and sixth rounds.Tom Hatch and Keegan Thompson were both recent third-round choices by the Cubs in June. Both have exceeded expectations in Tennessee, where pitchers can tend to come unglued. Disregarding any aspect of assets in a draft tends to lead to vacancies. I’m impressed with the depth of the draft on both sides of the ball this cycle. Fangraphs puts the Cubs 27th spot atop a run of preps. I doubt the Cubs would go that direction. If their board is accurate through 26 (it won’t be), my lean would be for Seth Johnson, Matt Wallner, or Tommy Henry.Johnson is very new to pitching. A shortstop last season at Louisburg College, he transferred to Campbell University. For those of you who are pitching mechanics-minded, here is video that is way better than I’m used to from college films.Matt Wallner is a right-fielder who also pitches in the mid-90’s. The bat is the buy here, but the arm indicates “can play right field”. Earlier in the season, Wallner and JJ Bleday (Vanderbilt) were closely ranked. Bleday has done better, as have Kameron Misner (Missouri) and Hunter Bishop (Arizona State). Here’s some recent video of Wallner.Henry is a crafty lefty from Michigan who is surging up draft boards. If you’re a velocity agnostic, Henry is just about ideal. He finds ways to induce meaningless contact, Fangraphs uses the term “TrackMan friendly” with Henry.Regardless of perceived weaknesses in any pipeline, the top pick ought to be “the best player available”. If the board gets to the Cubs with those three players on the board, and none of the talent above on the Fangraphs list, who do you want? Which pitcher of the two looks more ace-like (in four years)? What other questions do you have about the pending draft?

A new era of Orioles baseball started when Mullins replaced Adam Jones in center field. But Mullins doesn’t project as the leader of that era Jaime Garcia Jersey , and that’s fine."I think I am similar to many Orioles fans in that I get a little too excited about hot prospects that come up through Baltimore’s minor league system. Who knows what has made us this way. Maybe it’s knowing that we’ll never compete with the big spenders for top free agent talent, making drafting and developing players necessary. Maybe it’s been years of watching our prospects fail in Baltimore and succeed elsewhere, or be traded away at the deadline for a middling veteran. Maybe someday Mike Elias and company can cure us of this affliction. In 2018, the prospect that Birdland got excited about, perhaps too excited, was Cedric Mullins. Mullins is a nice story. He didn’t start his professional career as a highly-touted prospect (13th round draft selection), but put up solid numbers in the minors and caught everybody’s attention during last year’s spring training. His promotion to the Orioles in August felt larger than a prospect getting his first taste of big league action on a last place team. When his arrival pushed Adam Jones out of center field, it was a changing of the guard, a sign that a new era of Orioles baseball was beginning. We hoped that he would be the first of many in a wave of talent that will rise to Baltimore in the coming year or so. That could certainly still happen. But it would benefit Orioles fans to step back and take a sober look at Mullins’ stats and what his scouting reports. While he represented the first wave of the rebuild, he isn’t necessarily going to be the best wave. We also need to keep in mind that the front office who drafted him and the manager who penciled him into center field instead of Jones are gone. The new regime is undoubtedly already scouting Mullins and the rest of the club’s top prospects. What do they see when they look at Mullins? In 191 plate appearances spanning 45 games as a rookie http://www.bluejaysfanproshop.com/authentic-curtis-granderson-jersey , he slashed .235/.312/.359 and hit four home runs. Those numbers don’t jump off the page, but he was a 23-year-old who had only two full seasons of minor league ball under his belt. There were some serious red flags, though. His numbers from the right side of the plate were .156/.296/.156. This is after struggling as a right-handed hitter throughout his time in the minors. As Roch Kubatko points out, the Orioles may need to consider telling him to hit exclusively from the left side if those numbers don’t improve. (For the sake of comparison, Mullins batted .264/.319/.432 from the left side during his short time in the majors.)Also concerning is the fact that Mullins was only successful in two of his five stolen base attempts after being called up. Speed is a big part of Mullins’ game (77 stolen bases in 377 minor league games) and seeing him struggle was mildly concerning. While Mike Elias and Brandon Hyde certainly have looked at these red flags, there is also a large body of work that supports his standing as the organization’s number eight prospect entering last season. He is a career .274/.330/.450 hitter in parts of four minor league seasons. His speed and some pop (41 minor league homers) is a sought-after combination. While he displayed a few ball defensively in Baltimore, the reports on his defense are very good. There is a lot to like here. Most scouting reports say that Mullins falls on the line between solid starter and fourth outfielder. Both of those are useful on a major league team, and his college coach said that his defense was good enough to jump straight from Campbell University as a reserve outfielder. That is his floor. If his skills develop, he could be a plus defender whose power/speed combination make him a nice asset at the top of the lineup. Scouting reports are not calling Mullins a future All-Star. Orioles fans need to keep that in mind as 2019 progresses. When Mullins was the first prospect called up last season, and replaced none other than Adam Jones in center field Freddy Galvis Jersey , he unfairly became the face of the Great Baltimore Rebuild. That is a heavy burden to carry for a prospect whose ceiling appears to be a solid major league starter. The 2019 Baltimore Orioles will be all about the future. As we look for anything resembling good news or a glimpse at the next good O’s team, remember to judge Cedric Mullins with a level head. He is a very young player who is still learning at the major league level, with the added challenge of learning from a completely new field staff. Said new staff may think he could benefit from more time at AAA Norfolk. A trip back down doesn’t mean that his career is derailed.Cedric Mullins is not and will not be the savior of the Orioles. He may just be a pretty good starter if everything goes right for him, and that’s perfectly fine. We’ll just have to find another player to get irrationally excited about. WASHINGTON (AP) — For the first time since 2011 Addison Russell Jersey , the Washington Nationals will go through a season without any help from Bryce Harper. So it’s rather likely this year will be viewed, at least in part, as a referendum on whether the Nationals should have figured out a way to keep the young slugger.“Everyone wants this answer: Is it better or worse without him? You can’t say one way or the other. Our chemistry and our vibe — whatever you want to call it — is really good. It’s one of the best that we’ve had in years. And people will read that and say: ‘Oh, well, because Bryce is gone.’ No, it has nothing to do with that,” Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman said. “If he re-signed here, and we signed all these other guys as well, it could be the same. You don’t know. Everyone wants to talk about (Harper), which I get, but I think everyone in here is really happy with the group we have.”This much is clear: It’s a significantly different group.General manager Mike Rizzo remade more than a third of the roster after the Nationals went 82-80 and missed the playoffs following two NL East titles in a row.Max Scherzer, for one, was not surprised at all to see Washington sign free agent after free agent and add a couple of other players via trade.“I mean, here’s the reality of it: When you lose, and you fail as a team, you’re probably going to have some roster turnover,” said Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner. “That’s just how it is in baseball. Last year was a failure for us, so our front office wanted to make changes across the board. Now we just want to get everybody on the same page.”That job falls to manager Dave Martinez, whose second season in charge begins March 28 at home against the division rival New York Mets.“Hopefully,” Rizzo said, “I gave him the right parts.”Harper is no longer around after playing his first seven seasons in Washington, making six All-Star teams and winning Rookie of the Year and MVP awards. He left to sign a $330 million, 13-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies after the Nationals offered $300 million with a significant chunk of it deferred. No one on the Nationals produced more homers (34), RBIs (100), walks (130) or runs (103) than Harper last season.“As good as Harper is Sammy Sosa Jersey , we had to bring in other pieces. Not just one guy, but multiple personnel,” Martinez said. “Not one guy is going to win games for you. They all have to do their job.”Some other things to know about the 2019 Washington Nationals:NEW FACESA rotation fronted by Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg added lefty Patrick Corbin for $140 million over six years and righty Anibal Sanchez. A bullpen that needed restocking added former closers Trevor Rosenthal (coming off reconstructive elbow surgery) and Kyle Barraclough, along with experienced lefty Tony Sipp. Two catchers came aboard, AL All-Star Yan Gomes and Kurt Suzuki. Brian Dozier takes over as the starting second baseman.ROOKIE TO WATCHA year after left fielder Juan Soto was a revelation at age 19, finishing as Rookie of the Year runner-up, center fielder Victor Robles gets his shot at 21. Robles showed glimpses of his power and speed during a call-up last season. “I feel ready, physically and mentally,” Robles said through a translator.REAL ROTATIONNo “openers” here. Rizzo is a firm believer in the value of starting pitching in the most traditional sense. Having healthy and up-to-their-high-standards years from the top three members of the rotation not only will bring wins, it will ease the burden on the bullpen.GETTING RELIEFCloser Sean Doolittle is a known quantity; the rest of the rebuilt relief corps could be the real key to Washington’s success. “They say the last three outs are the hardest to get,” Doolittle said. “But they’re not always the most important.” JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Leaving the clubhouse after his first exhibition game this year, St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina got a fist bump from third baseman Matt Carpenter.“It’s good to have you back,” said Carpenter, one All-Star to another.Molina went 1 for 2 as a designated hitter Friday, the 36-year-old’s first game since left knee surgery in mid-December. Molina is likely to be behind the plate on Saturday, catching Adam Wainwright against Houston — about a week ahead of the original projection for him to catch.“I can’t really tell you how happy I am just to be back with Waino,” Molina said.A nine-time All-Star and nine-time Gold Glove, Molina singled through the left side off Washington newcomer Patrick Corbin and scored in a three-run Cardinals‘ first.“Just proves yet again he’s a special guy,” St. Louis manager Mike Shildt said. “Comes in, first at-bat, gets down 0-2 and battles, battles, battles. It’s impressive to see a guy that takes a pro at-bat like that — that can work on getting his timing as the at-bat goes.”Molina then lined out to first.“I was nervous about how I was going to feel but that’s a good nervous and everything feels fine, everything feels good with my body,” Molina said. “I’m happy to be back and part of the team again.”Marcell Ozuna replaced Molina at designated hitter Joe Maddon Jersey , striking out twice. Ozuna, hitless in 14 spring training at-bats, had right shoulder surgery on Oct. 30. He is slated to join outfielders in throwing drills on Saturday and could make his first outfield appearance on Monday in left.“I think it’s going to help when he gets into games because that flow of play will get him in a little bit of rhythm,” Shildt said.AROUND THE GRAPEFRUIT AND CACTUS LEAGUESCUBS 9, MARINERS 3Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager is expected to be OK after rolling over his glove hand diving for a groundball by Javier Baez. HOUSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale was still feeling weak Wednesday and won’t start Game 5 of the AL Championship Series.Sale threw in the outfield for 10-15 minutes before Game 4 in Houston http://www.astrosfanproshop.com/authentic-justin-verlander-jersey , but manager Alex Cora said the seven-time All-Star didn’t throw a bullpen as planned. David Price will start Thursday night on three days’ rest instead.Cora said Sale lost some weight because of a stomach illness that forced him to spend a night in the hospital after the lanky left-hander started the ALCS opener against the Astros.“He’s feeling better compared to yesterday, but physically he’s not there yet,” Cora said before Game 4. “So I think if necessary he’ll pitch Game 6. He feels that he’ll be ready for that one. And we’ll go from there.”With Price warming up in the bullpen in case he was needed in relief, the Red Sox held on for an 8-6 victory Wednesday night to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Game 6, if necessary, would be Saturday night in Boston.Dave Dombrowski, the team’s president of baseball operations, said Sale told him “he’s fine and he’ll be ready to go on Saturday.”Cora said there’s “no chance” Sale will pitch in any situation in Game 5.Price was the Game 2 starter, when he allowed four runs over 4 2/3 innings and didn’t get a decision in Boston’s 7-5 victory that evened the series. Available out of the bullpen, the lefty was getting loose late Wednesday night but didn’t come into the game.“I think it’ll just make me a little bit more sharp for tomorrow. Might have found a new thing for me to do the day before I pitch Brian McCann Jersey ,” Price said.“To have that opportunity to punch our ticket to the World Series is very cool,” he said.Sale did not speak to reporters Wednesday.Cora said earlier this week that Sale started feeling ill right after Game 1 and went to a hospital early Sunday morning.Sale was released Monday from Massachusetts General Hospital after remaining there overnight for observation. He rejoined the team Tuesday in Houston before Game 3.The club hasn’t specified Sale’s ailment or treatment, though Cora has said it was nothing serious.Sale struggled with his control in Boston’s 7-2 home loss to the Astros on Saturday night. He allowed two runs, four walks and hit a batter in four innings. The lefty made just one start between July 27 and Sept. 11 because of mild left shoulder inflammation, then made four starts during the rest of the regular season. He beat the Yankees in the Division Series opener and pitched one inning of relief in Game 4 as the Red Sox won the best-of-five series. At least there’s no-one with an infinite ERA this season!"30 Diamondbacks took the mound this season, though I’m taking an executive decision to exclude Daniel Descalso, Alex Avila and Jeff Mathis from qualifying for this award. We do not want a whole ‘Boaty McBoatface’ situation here, thank you very much. Though I note sadly, all three of the position players to pitch for the D-backs in 2018 had a better ERA than Shelby Miller had over his sixteen innings of work... [And Kris Medlen too, though at least he had the wisdom to retire from the game] And Alex Avila had a better fielding-independent ERA than everyone bar Patrick Corbin and Andrew Chafin. But http://www.astrosfanproshop.com/authentic-justin-verlander-jersey , still...No.In some ways, the five candidates pick themselves: choose the five guys with the lowest ERAs to have thrown at least fifty innings last year. T.J. McFarland, Yoshihisa Hirano, Clay Buchholz, Corbin and Zack Greinke. Job done, thanks for coming, I’ll start writing up the poll post. But perhaps there could be cases made for some outside the top five. Andrew Chafin, for example, fell just two outs short of the 50 IP qualifier, while having a lower ERA than Corbin or Greinke Tyler Clippard Jersey , and as noted above, having one of the best FIPs on the team. That’s doubly impressive, given Chafin’s well-known struggles with putting the first batter faced aboard (14 BB + 2 HBP of 77 there, compared to 11 + 0 of 134 thereafter). Other possible fringe candidates include Jimmie Sherfy, who now sports a regular-season career ERA of exactly one after 27 appearances. Or Yoan Lopez, whose K:BB ratio of 11:1 was among the best in franchise history [The Play Index at Baseball Reference is down at the time of writing so I’m going to have to remain kinda vague on that statement!] My immediate thought is that it’s unlikely any of these will move the needle particularly much, and we’re likely to go with the five initial candidates mentioned above. However, #ChangeMyMind. That’s what the comments section is for, as we seek to establish the nominees for this penultimate category.

Looking back at a pitcher who will live on in Astros lore"WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Houston Astros NewsGame ThreadsHouston Astros Minor LeaguesAstros Game DayPodcastsOde to CFM: A Charlie Morton RetrospectiveNew Jimmy Wynn Jersey ,15commentsLooking back at a pitcher who will live on in Astros lorewas guaranteed. I think a lot of people, myself included, had mentally assumed he would be returning to the Astros, even after they didn’t make him a qualifying offer. There seemed to be signs that he would be coming back, but it turned out to not be in the cards. Still, that doesn’t explain everything. Sure, Houston needs pitching, but missing out on Patrick Corbin or Nathan Eovaldi didn’t hurt. And it’s been sad to see so many other longtime fixtures of the franchise likely moving on this winter, from Dallas Keuchel to Evan Gattis to Marwin Gonzalez. But something about losing Ground Chuck that feels a little different than them.Maybe it’s just that there was still some hope he’d be coming back, whereas we’ve been mentally preparing (to some extent or another) for the other three to leave for months now. Or maybe it’s how quietly and quickly he grew on Astros fans; he wasn’t a major trade acquisition, like Gattis, or a minor leaguer called up who we got to watch develop, like Keuchel or Marwin.Instead, Morton kind of snuck up on everyone the last few seasons. Coming off a pair of career years, it’s almost funny to look back at the news stories that were written at the time of his signing back in November of 2016. There was a little optimism that he could be a mid-rotation starter, a little hesitancy about if he could stay healthy enough to pitch, but generally, there was a lot of indifference. A lot of people saw it as just a depth signing; articles and comments discussing the move as a part of other deals the Astros were making almost always totally ignored discussing Morton in favor of everyone else.Which makes sense to some extent http://www.astrosfanproshop.com/authentic-justin-verlander-jersey , as his career up to that point had been pretty uninteresting. He was a former Braves 3rd round pick in 2002 (the same draft that saw them take Jeff Francoeur and Brian McCann in the rounds before him), a point in the draft in which there are still some good players, but most fade away unnoticed (22 of the 30 players from that round never made the majors, and only Morton and Curtis Granderson have had any sort of success in the Majors). He was then traded to Pittsburgh as part of the Nate McLouth trade, where he went through a bunch of reworks (remember when he tried to imitate Roy Halladay?), but usually just wound up being another back-end starter with frequent injuries. After 7 years there, he traveled across the state to the Phillies, but was once again the victim of injuries.Prior to signing with Houston, Morton was a newly-33-year-old who had nearly 900 innings with a 4.54 ERA and a 4.10 FIP. By Wins Above Replacement, Baseball-Reference had him as a -0.5 WAR pitcher for his career, while Fangraphs had a slightly rosier (but still generally unimpressive) 7.8 mark over parts of nine seasons. He was seen as another cog in part of a wider offseason plan, where all he had to do was basically be as good as Doug Fister. How crazy is it that this is a guy who would pick up his first All-Star Game appearance at the age of 34? Who would earn arguably the two most important wins in franchise history? Who would be on the mound for a moment that’s already immortalized and, ten or twenty or however many years from now, you’ll be able to rewatch and smile like it just happened? It’s hard to overstate just how important that World Series Game 7 relief appearance is, too. Coming off of a strong 6-and-a-third inning start in Game 4 that ended in a disappointing loss via bullpen implosion, and coming into a game that had already seen four pitchers fail to record more than seven outs, it would have been understandable for any pitcher to give it their all for two or three innings, then trust their teammates to see things through. After all Charlie Morton Jersey , Ground Chuck was a pitcher with a mile-long injury report pitching on short rest who had seemingly struggled in his first inning, allowing a run on twenty pitches and getting hit with a bat shard. But Morton buckled down. In a postseason that had seen bullpen disasters galore, Charlie decided to take matters into his own hands. Each inning from there on would be a 1-2-3 affair, each with a strikeout. Going into the ninth with only 43 pitches, it was clear that no one else would be coming in to close things out that night. And it wasn’t just Houston history the Connecticut native made that night. A week and a half earlier, he had been tagged the starter for ALCS Game 7. After dropping three in a row at Yankee Stadium, the Astros’ season had been saved by a heroic performance from Justin Verlander. But that’s almost to be expected when you acquire an ace who’s already planning his Cooperstown speech. What shocked some people was following that up with the supposed-journeyman-fifth-starter who only just joined the team that year, rather than the homegrown young fireballer Lance McCullers. But Morton delivered, striking out five in five strong innings. With McCullers’ own strong four innings to close things out, Charlie picked up the win. Between that start, and being the pitcher of record in the final World Series game, Morton became the first pitcher in MLB history to win two Game 7s in a single season. It may be decades before we see someone match that feat. And had Morton lasted just two outs more in his first start of the playoffs, he would have been the winning pitcher in every single clinching game that year. That’s a hell of an impact to leave on just a two-year deal, especially one that so many critics at the time dismissed or overlooked. But he followed it up by being a part of the absolutely historic rotation this year, keeping pace with Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole at the tops of the leaderboards for months. Even with his eventual injury limiting his innings, he still managed to dot the leaderboards, leading the league in winning percentage and making the top ten in a range of other stats. It’s amazing and inspiring to see someone like Charlie, after years of injury and stalling out and self-improvement http://www.astrosfanproshop.com/authentic-justin-verlander-jersey , reach the pinnacle of success, etch his name in the record books, and then improve on that all while remaining such a humble and pleasant person. Regardless of the fact that he was only in town for two years, the impression he made here has been massive. Good luck in Tampa, CFM; we’ll all miss you here. NEW YORK (AP) — Jessica Mendoza has heard the ribbing. An ESPN “Sunday Night Baseball” analyst since 2015, she added a part-time role last month as a New York Mets baseball operations adviser.“OK, you work for the Mets, we can’t talk to you anymore,” she recalled hearing from teams during her spring training rounds, quickly adding “in a joking way.”She’s not worried that wearing two hats will lead to less inside info for her two ears. In an era when players and clubs treat the tiniest tidbit as a state secret, Mendoza already felt teams were hesitant to provide her intelligence in her pundit role because they knew “information they would give me as a member from ESPN was about to go on air.” She doesn’t expect that to change with the new job title.Mendoza spoke Thursday during a conference call with booth-mate Alex Rodriguez to promote the 30th anniversary of ESPN’s Sunday night broadcasts, which also include play-by-play man Matt Vasgersian.Mark Gross, ESPN senior vice president of production and remote events, expressed confidence in Mendoza’s impartiality. She will continue to broadcast games involving the Mets.“We’re not looking to fool anybody. We’re not looking to trick the viewers into anything,” he said. “We’ll be upfront with viewers off the top of the game, letting people know, and we will let the viewers decide ultimately if this is something that they’re on board with.”Rodriguez has been a New York Yankees adviser since his retirement, among several players to work as broadcasters while retaining a part-time role with a team.“Alex’s commentary last year on a Yankee game was no different than if it was on any other game Jose Cruz Jr. Jersey ,” Gross said.A member of the U.S. Olympic softball team in 2004 and 2008, Mendoza said new Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen first spoke with her about a position last August or September, when he still was co-head of the CAA Baseball agency and was preparing to interview with New York.“I’m actually putting you in my presentation and I just wanted to get your OK with that, your thoughts,” she remembered him saying. “So we kind of started talking about it then, and from there, obviously, he got the job.”Van Wagenen asked her at first whether she would move to New York to work for the Mets full-time, an entreaty Mendoza took as “a little joking.” The 38-year-old wanted to remain in California, where her kids go to school. She views ESPN as her “full-bore priority.” Mendoza has spent one day working for the Mets since she was hired March 5.Mendoza says she isn’t worried that Mets owner Fred Wilpon or chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, the owner’s son, would be upset if she is critical. Mendoza promises to be just as reproving directly with team management.“Part of my job is to kind of look, evaluate and knowing that, be honest. I’m an analyst first,” she said. “I would hope that that’s why they hired me, because of my honesty and criticism and not just to say all the right things.”

NEW YORK (AP) Booed as he walked off the Yankee Stadium mound in the third inning http://www.angelsfanproshop.com/authentic-zack-cozart-jersey , Sonny Gray smiled.A few moments later, third base coach Phil Nevin screamed at players in the New York dugout. The Yankees headed to their four-game series at Fenway Park after perhaps their worst performance this season, a 7-5 defeat Wednesday to the Baltimore Orioles, who have the worst record in the major leagues. And to Alex Cobb, who leads the big leagues in losses .”We’re a lot better than what we did today,” Nevin said. ”People have different ways of firing guys up. I think that was my first one this year, I guess.”Gleyber Torres raised his homer total to 17 with a solo shot in the second and a three-run drive in the ninth , but the rookie second baseman also failed to cover first base on Caleb Joseph’s second-inning bunt and second on Renato Nunez’s third-inning grounder to shortstop, leading to hits both times.Gray (8-8) may have lost his rotation spot after putting New York in a 7-1 deficit. Lance Lynn followed with 4 1/3 scoreless innings in his Yankees debut and first regular-season relief appearance since 2012, and manager Aaron Boone wouldn’t commit to staying with Gray .”That’s something that we’ll talk about now in the hours ahead, days ahead about what our plans will be going forward,” Boone said.On an afternoon that began with a partly sunny sky, Gray left under dark clouds just before a 39-minute rain delay. He tied his career high by allowing seven runs, giving up eight hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings as his ERA rose to 5.56. Gray wiped his faced as he left the mound, adjusted his cap and then smirked when fans jeered.”I’ve never been a guy to come off the field and throw a glove or throw a hat or punch something or do anything,” Gray said. ”I’ve always been a mellow guy that tries to think things through and get over it.”Gray said fans shouldn’t question his desire because of his demeanor.”You can go around and ask the 24 other guys in this clubhouse who I am, what kind of person I am, what I’m about, and they’ll tell you Garrett Richards Jersey ,” he said. ”You’ve seen me do that before.”He is 12-15 with a 4.85 ERA since he was acquired from Oakland at last year’s trade deadline. His ERA this year is 7.71 at Yankee Stadium and 3.62 on the road.”I’ve struggled. I don’t know if it has anything to do with New York, or it’s just strictly on the field,” he said. Then a 19-year-old at Vanderbilt, Gray tweeted on Oct. 29, 2009, that ”You have to be really good to get all of Yankee stadium to boo you as you’re walking off the mound…and a hall of famer to smile about it.” That was when Pedro Martinez lost World Series Game 2 to New York.Gray was asked about another tweet, one from Sept. 12, 2012, that said ”1. You didn’t go to college. 2. You are black.” He said the tweet, since deleted, was a response to Rashun Dixon, a teammate in the Oakland minor league system whose brother Anthony played in the NFL.”That’s an inside joke,” Gray said. ”And if people are trying to dig stuff up, then ask Sir Peanut. He’s one of my best friends,” referring to Dixon by his Twitter handle.New York (68-38) dropped 5 1/2 games behind Boston (75-34). This is the first time since the leagues split into divisions in 1969 that two teams in the same division began August with a winning percentage .640 or higher, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.Boone, a laid-back Californian, understood the eruption by the extroverted Nevin.”Over the course of the season you’re going to have outbursts from guys, from coaches http://www.angelsfanproshop.com/authentic-zack-cozart-jersey , from me, whatever, so just emotion of the season, of the game,” he said.First baseman Greg Bird said the lashing was needed.”We were dragging a little bit today,” he said.Baltimore, which traded six veterans for prospects in recent weeks, took a 5-0 lead in the second . Trey Mancini hit a run-scoring single , and Joseph reached on a bunt single as third baseman Miguel Andujar delayed his throw because Torres didn’t sprint to cover first.Renato Nunez followed with a two-run double over a shallow Shane Robinson in right , and Tim Beckham had a two-run single .Torres led off the bottom half with his first home run since July 1 , and Cobb (3-14) struck out Giancarlo Stanton to end the inning , leaving the Yankees 0 for 15 with four sacrifice flies in their last 19 plate appearances with the bases loaded.Mancini homered in the third , and Breyvic Valera greeted Lynn with a grounder to Didi Gregorius. The shortstop looked to second for a force, saw Torres wasn’t there, and then threw too late to first as another run scored .”I know I missed a couple plays,” Torres said. ”I feel pretty bad.”Torres, 21, was a shortstop until last year.”A lot of that is youthfulness, his inexperience at the position Huston Street Jersey , the nuances where you just do things all the time, second nature,” Boone said.Andujar hit a based loaded-single against Mychal Givens in the eighth, but Paul Fry got pinch-hitter Neil Walker to ground into an inning-ending double play. After Torres’ two-out homer against Mike Wright Jr. , Bird followed a game-ending popup.Lynn threw 71 pitches, which rules him out for a start at Boston. But he could be in the rotation soon.”When they’ve told me I go pitch, I go pitch,” he said.TRAINER’S ROOMYankees: Boone said the team will not know until Thursday at the earliest whether LHP J.A. Walker Buehler http://www.dodgersfanproshop.com/authentic-max-muncy-jersey , Julio Urias, Ismael Vald z, Fernando Valenzuela, Don Newcombe have all made postseason starts in rookie season"If you watched Walker Buehler pitch last Monday, it is sometimes hard to remember that he is a rookie starting pitcher. And today, when Buehler takes the mound in Atlanta, he will become one of just a few Dodger rookie pitchers to start a postseason game. One thing up front, for this article Ross Stripling Jersey , I am not including Dodger pitchers who pitched professionally in Asia before coming to Los Angeles. There are four pitchers, Hideo Nomo, Hiroki Kuroda, Hyun-jin Ryu and Kenta Maeda who all started postseason games in their first seasons with Los Angeles.Buehler will become the first Dodger rookie that was drafted by the Dodgers to make a postseason start.Going back to 1947, with Buehler’s start today, there have been thirteen rookie pitchers to start a postseason game for the Dodgers, seven with the Brooklyn Dodgers.Harry Taylor holds the distinction of the only World Series starting pitcher to not record an out and give up an unearned run.Taylor started Game 4 of the 1947 World Series.Don Newcombe made two starts in the 1949 World Series.Newcombe was the third recipient of National League Rookie of the Year Award. He went 17-8 and pitched 244鈪?innings with a 3.17 ERA.Joe Black was the 1952 National League Rookie of the Year awardee.Despite making just two starts in the regular season, Black started three times in the 1952 World Series.Billy Loes started Game 6 for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1952 World Series.Johnny Podres http://www.dodgersfanproshop.com/authentic-max-muncy-jersey , who would become the first World Series MVP for the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers, started Game 5 of the 1953 World Series in his rookie season.Roger Craig was a rookie for the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers and he started and won Game 5 in that year’s World Series.Another rookie starter in the 1955 World Series was Karl Spooner.Spooner would not pitch in the major leagues again after his Game 6 start.Fernando Valenzuela ended his historic 1981 rookie season by making starts in each of the three postseason series the Dodgers played that season. His last start in Game 3 of the 1981 World Series would be the first matchup on two Rookie of the Year Award winners in the season they won the award.Tim Belcher was undefeated in four starts in the 1988 postseason (though he was helped by a certain pinch-hit home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series). Ismael Vald茅z finished seventh in the 1995 Rookie of the Year balloting behind teammate Hideo Nomo and future HOF Chipper Jones.Vald茅z made one start in the 1995 NLDS and he pitched well, going seven innings and giving up two unearned runs and three hits against the Cincinnati Reds.Fan favorite Hung-Chih Kuo started Game 2 of the 2006 NLDS against the New York Mets.Julio Ur铆as started Game 4 of the 2016 NLCS against the Chicago Cubs.Ur铆as had pitched 77 innings in his rookie season with the Dodgers and he was just two months past his 20th birthday when he made that start. It did not go well for Ur铆as as he gave up four runs in 3鈪?innings pitched.Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Don Sutton all pitched for pennant winning teams in their rookie seasons but they did not start in that season’s World Series.Clayton Kershaw and Chad Billingsley played for division winning teams in their rookie seasons but neither of them started in the playoffs that season.Walker Buehler has already shown that he can pitch in big games, today’s start can only add to that reputation. Game InfoTime:5:07 p.m. PDTTV:FS1 You really didn’t expect David Stearns to go this long without a minor league signing, did you?"While most of the talk about the Brewers’ catching situation has focused on the possibility of upgrades at the Major League level, they also could use some help at the upper levels of the minor league organization.Outside of Jacob Nottingham, the Brewers didn’t necessarily have anyone who was ready to handle Triple-A after Christian Bethancourt became a minor league free agent. Add in the possibility of Nottingham maybe getting a chance to steal a Major League roster spot this spring Joc Pederson Jersey , and the organization needed someone who could at least fill a season before some of the young catchers in the lower levels of the minors start to work their way up.That’s why David Stearns went out and signed what might be the best name for a catcher you could dream up — Tuffy Gosewisch — to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. If there was ever someone destined to be a baseball player in San Antonio, it’s someone named Tuffy. He’s a real person, there’s a picture and everything.Gosewisch is a veteran minor leaguer, having spent 12 seasons riding the bus — including last season at Triple-A Syracuse in the Washington Nationals system, where he hit .219/.310/.335. He didn’t make his Major League debut until he was 29, finally getting the call from the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013. He spent 7.5 years in the Philadelphia system before having his contract bought by Toronto in 2012, only to sign with Arizona that offseason as a minor league free agent. He hasn’t had much success during his brief stints in the big leagues, hitting .190/.228/.271 in 137 games over the course of 5 seasons. He was most recently in the Majors with Seattle in 2017 http://www.dodgersfanproshop.com/authentic-max-muncy-jersey , when he played in 11 games in May of that year. He’ll likely be a camp body until heading back to minor league camp, where he’ll probably end up being almost a player-coach, similar to the way Tim Dillard has been kept around in the Triple-A bullpen.Statistics courtesy of Baseball-Reference

ATLANTA (AP) — Braves manager Brian Snitker gave most of his everyday players some time off a day after Atlanta clinched the NL East.Lane Adams took advantage of a rare opportunity.“You see the fun the starters have day in and day out Luis Tiant Jersey ,” Adams said. “When I saw my name in the lineup I just wanted to go out, have fun, enjoy it and take it in because this is a special group, a special crowd and a special time for this organization.”Adams homered and drove in two runs, Anibal Sanchez won for the first time in nine starts and the Atlanta Braves used a lineup of reserves to win their fifth straight game, 2-1 over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. The loss dropped Philadelphia from postseason contention. Atlanta, the first NL team to qualify for the playoffs, eliminated the Phillies from the division race on Saturday. The Braves have the second-best record among NL division leaders at 88-68 and could earn home-field advantage in the NL Division Series with a strong performance during the final week of the regular season. The Braves mostly rested their regulars against ace Aaron Nola (16-6). Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis each had one at-bat in Atlanta’s final home game before walking off the field to standing ovations before the start of the second.“Everybody deserved it, but they’re the two guys that have posted up every day,” Snitker said. “They’re on a 162-game pace and kind of our guts. So I thought that was pretty cool they got to get recognized. It was very well deserved.”Among the other regulars to make an appearance, Ozzie Albies grounded out as a pinch-hitter in the fifth and Ronald Acuna Jr. flew out as a pinch-hitter in the eighth.Adams, filling in for center fielder Ender Inciarte, had an RBI double in the second and hit his second homer in the fifth.Sanchez (7-6) further secured his role as Atlanta’s No. 3 starter for the division series behind Mike Foltynewicz and Kevin Gausman, allowing four hits, one run and one walk in five innings. Sanchez won for the first time since Aug. 3 and has a 3.09 ERA over that span.“He’s been huge,” Snitker said. “What a great story that is. As far as being a complete pitcher and executing pitches, it’s pretty good. There’s a lot of knowledge there. He’s been doing it a long time and he’s been successful.”Scott Kingery’s eighth homer for Philadelphia tied it at 1-all in the third. The Phillies were swept in a four-game series in Atlanta for the first time since 1997.Nola gave up four hits http://www.redsoxproshops.com/authentic-dustin-pedroia-jersey , two runs and one walk with six strikeouts in six innings. He has surrendered nine homers in five starts this month and is 1-3 with a 4.55 ERA over that span.Nola wants to make one final start, giving him 33 for the season, as Philadelphia tries to finish above .500.“I think just going forward, everybody has confidence in each other,” he said. “To finish the year out strong is important to us.”Reliever Max Fried allowed three baseunners in the sixth and seventh for Atlanta. Sam Freeman faced the minimum in the eighth.Shane Carle pitched a shaky ninth to earn his first career save in two chances. He walked two batters and hit Kingery with a pitch before Wilson Ramos grounded out to end it.LOOKING AHEADPhillies manager Gabe Kapler said the team is committed to playing young talent like Kingery, J.P. Crawford, Odubel Herrera and Aaron Altherr in the final week. Veterans like Asdrubal Cabrera and Ramos who were acquired for the playoff run will be used in reserve roles. Kapler added that catcher Jorge Alfaro will play every day if his mild right quadriceps strain isn’t a bother.SOLID YEARNola has fallen off in September, but he’s still having a career-best season. He avoided injuries to surpass 200 innings for the first time and ranks second in the NL with a 2.45 ERA.BENCH QUESTIONSAtlanta has been waiting for Adam Duvall, who went 1-for-3 Sunday, to seize the role as the team’s primary source of right-handed power off the bench. But he’s been a bust, hitting .104 with no RBIs in 31 games, a span 48 at-bats, since coming over in a trade with Cincinnati.DROUGHT ENDSSanchez got his first hit since April 9, 2014, a span of 54 at-bats, with a single in the third. He crossed first base with his arms in the air as the Braves’ dugout celebrated.ATTENDANCEThe Braves, playing their last regular-season home game Tony Conigliaro Jersey , announced 2,555,782 tickets sold. Their home average of 31,519 fans ranks 12th in the majors in just the second season at SunTrust Park. The Braves have been better on the road (45-30) than at home (43-38).UP NEXTPhillies RHP Zach Eflin (11-7, 4.09 ERA) will try to win his third straight start as Philadelphia opens a four-game series Monday at Colorado. The Braves are off Monday and begin a three-game series Tuesday at the New York Mets with RHP Touki Toussaint (2-1, 4.30 ERA) on the mound. PHOENIX — The Cubs have played some of their best baseball here in crunch time, a stretch that has taken a big bite out of the Diamondbacks‘ playoff chances. The Cubs will enter Day 28 of a string of 30 straight days in which games were scheduled (if not necessarily played) with the first of a three-game series at Arizona on Monday. The sustained activity has not seemed to bother them. They are having a little fun with it, in fact.Article continues below ...Anthony Rizzo wore his uniform on the plane for a makeup game in Washington on Thursday, which would have been an off day but for the persistent rain that forced two postponements the previous weekend. The Cubs won.Ben Zobrist, who is third in the NL in hitting, rode his bicycle in uniform to Wrigley Field on Sunday, a 2-1 loss to Cincinnati.Still, the Cubs have won three of their last four games and 14 of their last 18 series as they send right-hander Kyle Hendricks (11-11) out to face Arizona left-hander Patrick Corbin (11-5) in the first game of the series. The Diamondbacks have not had as much success in the make-or-break portion of their season. They have played 11 straight games against division leaders and will have at least two more, inasmuch as the Cubs (87-62) enter with a 2 1/2-game lead over Milwaukee in the NL Central. The Diamondbacks lost three of four at home to Atlanta last weekend before going 2-5 on a road trip to Colorado and Houston, dropping them 4 1/2 games behind the NL West-leading Rockies with 12 games remaining. It has been a drastic reversal for an Arizona team that led or was tied for the NL West lead for 125 days this season and was still in first place on Sept. 1 before a third straight final at-bat loss in a four-game series to the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Diamondbacks (78-72) had not been fewer than seven games above .500 since June 10 before their 5-4 loss at Houston on Sunday. The Dodgers and Rockies begin a three-game series in Los Angeles on Monday.“We can’t get caught scoreboard watching,” Arizona reliever Brad Ziegler said. “We have to win our games. If we win our games, things will take care of themselves.”The Diamondbacks’ bullpen http://www.redsoxproshops.com/authentic-dustin-pedroia-jersey , which was so efficient in the first five months, has given up 43 runs in its last 50 innings, and manager Torey Lovullo has used right-hander Yoshihisa Hirano in the last two save situations instead of normal closer Brad Boxberger. Arizona also took a hit to its starting rotation when Clay Buchholz was shut down for the rest of the season because of elbow soreness he felt while warming up for scheduled start Thursday in Colorado. The Cubs have made their bullpen work even without closers Brandon Morrow and Pedro Strop. Morrow, who has 22 saves, has been on the disabled list since mid-July with a bone bruise. He threw a simulated game Saturday and could be activated for the Arizona series, manager Joe Madden said.Strop, who had 13 saves after taking over for Morrow, suffered a season-ending left hamstring injury while attempting to beat out a double play grounder in Washington on Tuesday.Since, the Cubs have gotten saves from Randy Rosario, Jorge De La Rosa and Steve Cishek. Both Rosario and De La Rosa had the first of their careers. Their last five saves have been from five different pitchers, including Jesse Chavez and Strop, the first time the Cubs have done that since 1991.“Everyone knows it’s the ninth inning,” said Cishek, who earned the save in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Cincinnati as the third pitcher in the ninth inning.“We just try to treat it like any other inning.”Corbin, who has a 3.05 ERA, is on the way to a career year, even if the victory totals don’t show it. He is third in the league in strikeouts (230) Steve Pearce Jersey , fourth in WHIP (1.03), tied for sixth in the league in quality starts (18) and seventh in ERA. His ratio of strikeouts to walks is 5.48:1, third in the league.Corbin has won five of his last six decisions and has made seven quality starts in his last eight, with 64 strikeouts against five walks in that span. He is 5-1 with a 3.68 ERA in seven career appearances, six starts, against the Cubs and beat the Cubs in his first start after the All-Star game, giving up six hits and one run in seven innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. He is 7-3 with a 3.14 ERA in 15 home starts this season.Hendricks, who has a 3.71 ERA, has won five of his seven decisions since a 5-1 loss to Arizona on July 24. He has given up a career-high 21 homers this season but has kept the ball in ballpark much better during his recent successful stretch, giving up only three homers in 54 2/3 innings and only one in his last 44 innings.Hendricks has faced Arizona only three times, going 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA. He won his only previous start at Chase Field, in 2016, when he led the league in ERA and finished third in the NL Cy Young voting.

MIAMI (AP) — Making his first opening day start, Kyle Freeland pitched like it was just another game, which means the Colorado Rockies won.The left-hander allowed two hits and one run in seven innings, and Colorado beat the sloppy Miami Marlins 6-3 Thursday.Freeland (1-0), who had a breakout 17-win season in 2018, retired his first 11 batters before Starlin Castro lined a single. The only other hit Freeland allowed was a pinch-hit home run by J.T Riddle leading off the sixth inning.“I try to keep my mental state the same throughout the season,” the left-hander said. “I try not to change anything just because it’s opening day and a new season. There’s really no reason to.”True enough. The Rockies have won 16 of Freeland’s 18 regular-season starts since July 2, and he has won nine consecutive decisions, the longest active streak in the major leagues.Miami had only four hits but had three home runs, including two by pinch-hitters for only the second time in franchise history. But the crowd was booing by the fourth inning Gleyber Torres Jersey , when the Rockies scored four times with the help of two errors.Colorado’s Nolan Arenado began earning his new $260 million, eight-year contract when he doubled to start the fourth and scored the first run off Jose Urena (0-1). Trevor Story homered , and David Dahl had three hits and scored twice.“We feel like we’re a long and deep lineup, and there are no easy outs,” Story said.Overall, it was the kind of start the Rockies had in mind as they seek their third consecutive trip to playoffs, and the first NL West title in franchise history. One downer for Colorado: Charlie Blackmon and newcomer Daniel Murphy each went 0 for 5 at the top of the order. The Rockies had a 6-0 lead by the fifth inning for Freeland, who struck out five and threw 93 pitches. He committed a throwing error but also made a nifty barehanded grab on the run to cover first for a 3-1 putout.Manager Bud Black liked the way Freeland responded with men on base.“He has the ability to make pitches at critical times,” Black said. “The fight in him is second to none.”The Marlins are off to a 0-1 start for the fifth consecutive year, and despite a rebranding that includes new colors and a new logo, they could be headed for their 10th losing season in a row.Neil Walker hit a pinch-hit homer in his first at-bat for Miami. Teammate Jorge Alfaro, another Marlins newcomer, homered with two out in the ninth.COSTLY COMEBACKERDahl hit a line drive off Urena’s left calf in the second inning, prompting a visit to the mound by Miami’s trainer. Urena went on to allow six runs, four earned, in 4 2/3 innings.“Jose hung in there,” manager Don Mattingly said. “I think after he got hit, it took some wind out of his sails. You could see it as the game went on.”Urena said the injury wasn’t serious.“It’s going to be a little tender, a little bit tight, but I’ll be fine Tyler Austin Jersey ,” he said.MARLINS LAPSESMiami’s defense turned leaky in the fourth, when shortstop Miguel Rojas made a wild throw to first and center fielder Lewis Brinson let a single elude him, allowing a runner to score from first.Earlier, catcher Alfaro was slow to pursue a pitch that bounced away from him, which permitted a runner to advance.“When you don’t play a crisp game — we made some mistakes that led to runs,” Mattingly said.Derek Jeter, beginning his second season as the Marlins’ CEO, watched the start of the game from the second row but was out of there by the fourth.DIFFERENT LOOKThe game drew a crowd of 25,423 at Marlins Park, where the outfield wall is now navy instead of a garish green, and the widely disliked home run sculpture has been replaced by a tiered, standing-room-only area. With rain in the area, the retractable roof was closed.TRAINER’S ROOMRockies: Before the game, they placed LHP Chris Rusin (mid-back strain) and RHP Antonio Senzatela (blister infection, right heel) on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 25.UP NEXTRHP German Marquez (14-11, 3.77 in 2018) is scheduled to start Friday for the Rockies against RHP Trevor Richards (4-9, 4.42).

He's struck out 59 batters in 59.2 innings. Healso won his first Silver Slugger Award.Miami went just 63-98 last season, and since it is still early in the rebuilding process, it doesn't figure to contend for a playoff spot anytime soon. The Marlins could stick with Realmuto for the foreseeable future since he can't hit free agency until 2021 http://www.metsfanproshop.com/authentic-tim-tebow-jersey , but dealing him now would likely allow the club to maximize his trade value.Aside from their starting pitching behind Aaron Nola and Jake Arrieta, catcher may be the Phillies' biggest need. They lost Wilson Ramos to the New York Mets in free agency, which means Jorge Alfaro and Andrew Knapp are their backstops.Alfaro hit .262 with 10 homers and 37 RBI last season, while Knapp hit .198 with four home runs and 15 RBI.Philadelphia has been active this offseason with the acquisitions of shortstop Jean Segura, outfielder Andrew McCutchen and reliever David Robertson. One or two more big splashes could be on the horizon, depending on what Harper and Machado do.If the Phillies don't land either of them Gary Carter Jersey , however, turning their attention to Realmuto and solving an area of weakness may be the best way to surpass the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals in the NL East.

That wasn't the case in this series, as the starting pitchers performed well in each game, including German Marquez Sunday with just two runs allowed in five innings. The problem was the hitting, as Colorado was shut out for the second time in a row Ketel Marte Jersey , finishing the series with just two total runs in three games while hitting 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position. In 28 innings this series, the Rockies scored in one of them.Ben Hutchison WISNBennyHutchMan the #Rockies offense is just non-existent.While this could be considered unlucky for a team that finished second in the NL in runs scored, this is an offense that was built around the performance of only two or three players. What a well deserved win for Broncos Country and for the Broncos players. I love the story of this game: Von’s guarantee Youth Jake Butt Jersey , the drummed up drama about how terrible the team is (which isn’t true...but more on that later), and the suspense that led up to this game.I really felt like this was a huge game for the team. If the Broncos didn’t win, this was going to be the final nail in the coffin from me on the Bronco’s season. I’ve already made it pretty clear what I think about the coaching staff in my previous reviews. So now we have something to look forward to if only for a couple more weeks.OffenseThis game was like a microcosm of the season for me when I look at how the offense was called and executed. The team very obviously has a great deal of talent in players like Phillip Lindsay, Emmanuel Sanders, Matt Paradis, and Courtland Sutton. At times, that talent shines for impactful, big plays. I even like how some of the play design works that goes into those big plays. The way Bill Musgrave uses motion, personnel grouping http://www.broncoscheapauthenticstore.com/darian-stewart-jersey-cheap , and different action out of the same formations is something we haven’t seen from our offense in years. But the big problem with the offense is how it is called. Our site has been harping on this for weeks: why do you keep passing the ball when the biggest liability on the offense is your quarterback? Why do we not lean on the running game more that is so obviously working with both Royce Freeman and Phillip Lindsay? Why do we have Freeman run on early long-to-go downs, and have Lindsay run on short yardage situations? When we are up by multiple scores, why do we keep 11 personnel out there and run into heavy boxes?None of this impacted this game because we faced a team with clearly inferior talent and ability to match up to us in any area of the game. But let me leave it at this: the Broncos keep losing close games largely in part to Musgrave not being aggressive early and leaning on a very potent run game.QuarterbacksCase Keenum is still JAG when it comes to playing QB. We saw a lot more effective offense overall, but his throws are still not accurate. He’s still staring down picks into double coverage. I found his play in this game very underwhelming.Yes, we can win lots of games this way. We did this all season back in 2015. But it will be in spite of, not because of the play we see at quarterback.LineThere’s not a lot I have to complain about from this offensive line. Our young guards in Max Garcia and Connor McGovern played well. Our tackles held the edges well enough. It wasn’t overly impressive, but it wasn’t a big issue that was leading to sacks and multiple TFLs in the run game. But let me say this: there’s been lots of whining in the MSM (especially if you listen to the local radio stations in Denver). It is largely nonsense. Stink takes a duece on Bolles’ game every other day and it is absolute hyperbole. Others as well have called out the line as being weak. I just don’t see that. Billy Turner is the best right tackle we’ve seen in 2 years. Connor McGovern is playing mostly enlightened football at RG. Matt Paradis is still one of the best centers in the league. And everyone’s favorite punching bag, Garett Bolles has a holding issue, but outside of that plays pretty decently at left tackle (yes he needs technique work...so what...watch his play late in games and tell me how bad he sucks...I’ll wait).Running BacksPhillip Lindsay is a masterpiece of a weapon. Who is Christian McCaffrey?I don’t know...and I don’t care. We have a more impactful player in this young stud who went undrafted. The guy is not a football player...he is a football weapon. More of the team’s offense needs to develop plays to get him in space. He needs to be one of the focal points of the offense because it will open everything else up.Royce Freeman has had his 2nd rough game of the season in a row. I would point out that one of the big things they need to do is give him formations with more blockers. Musgrave keeps running him into stacked boxes in -1 situations expecting him to flat out beat a defender who has a free run at him. That’s not how this works. Freeman is not Barry Sanders. He needs blockers to hold up the bad guys and give him creases to work with.ReceiversBig shout out to Emmanuel Sanders. Sanders has been one of my favorite players to watch on the field since he’s joined the Broncos. He plays all out every game and just like Lindsay Cheap Chris Harris Jr Jersey , he’s a very dangerous player with the ball in his hands in open space. I loved the trick play call and that Sanders got to throw a TD. I guess I’d just have loved it more against KC next week instead of a hapless Arizona team that I don’t think we needed tricks to beat.DefenseThis was easily the best defensive game I’ve seen from the Broncos in more than a year. We turned the ball over, stopped the run, and had sublime pass coverage. I don’t know if it was Joe Woods or Vance Joseph calling the plays, but they did a solid job.More importantly, I saw SUPREME effort from the defensive players. They looked hungry and wanted to eat the opposing team’s children (H/T Derek Wolfe).Front 7The run defense problem we’ve seen recently wasn’t the fault of the linemen, but they absolutely killed it up front in this game. The Broncos have switched to more of a space-eating front with Domata Peko, Derek Wolfe, and Adam Gotsis. They looked the part in this game clogging holes and creating time for the linebackers to crash down and bottle up the run with them.SecondaryBradley Roby was possessed in this game. That was not him playing football. The ghost of Deion Sanders straight up took him over and drove him like he was playing Madden (shush...I know Deion is still alive鈥?just roll with it). If Roby can play like this the rest of the season, we can make the playoffs. He attacked the ball Youth Justin Simmons Jersey , turned his head on time, every time he was defending, and stayed in stride with every guy he lined up with.Chris Harris, Jr. is always awesome. He had a superb pick-6 that I saw coming from a mile away. The guy deserved a play like that honestly. He is only one guy that does his job at the highest level every week and when the ball never comes your way (because there are far easier targets out there), it has to be frustrating when you want to win ball games.Special TeamsBrandon McManus needs some love every week he keeps batting a thousand. It is pretty refreshing and completely unexpected to see a guy kick so well every week.Final ThoughtsNext week is now the telling game. Can Denver go into KC and steal a win from one of the NFL’s best teams? They absolutely can. But I would argue all they need to do is play them competitively and it is a win for us.It starts with the Broncos learning from their loss to KC a few weeks ago. They can’t just all out rush Patrick Mahomes. They need to treat him like they do Russell Wilson and form a pocket around him, then collapse it instead of allowing him to escape and extend plays.Aside from that, the most important thing is that the coaching staff keeps working on being better. They should not at all pat themselves on the back for this win. They still have the same flaws from a coaching aspect and they need to put the players in position to win instead of fitting round pegs in square holes.Either way, this was a heck of a fun game to watch as a fan. I’m encouraged to see more games like this in the future because I can tell that the team has a great deal of talent by what they did this week. What about you, Broncos Country? Well deserved win? Coaches making strides? Players making plays?Hit me up in the comments and share your thoughts on the game and what you took away from it. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero Cheap Case Keenum Jersey , the Denver Broncos will interview San Francisco 49ers Quarterback’s Coach Rich Scangarello for their Offensive Coordinator position.Scangarello will interview with the Broncos on Monday. He spent a lot of time coaching at small schools, before landing his first NFL job with the Oakland Raiders as a quarterbacks assistant trying to make JaMarcus Russell successful. His return to the NFL happened in 2015 when he joined the Atlanta Falcons as an offensive quality control assistant under Kyle Shanahan. He returned to Shanahan’s staff in 2017 as the quarterbacks coach and helped make Nick Mullens a thing this past season. With just four seasons as a coach at the NFL level, he is definitely on the greener side of things. Update:The 49ers have denied the Broncos from interviewing their Quarterback’s coach Rich Scangarello for their vacant Offensive Coordinator position. However, the Broncos are not giving up per reports and this isn’t dead just yet.So stay tuned! Broncos GM John Elway and 49ers GM John Lynch will likely talk and potentially work this out.
